Boston, MA (Sports Network) - Boston Red Sox pitcher Ramiro Mendoza was placed on the 15-day disabled list Friday with right shoulder tendinitis.
Mendoza, who spent the first seven years of his career with the Yankees before signing with the rival Red Sox as a free agent prior to last season, has been hampered by numerous injuries during much of his time with Boston. He missed 49 games due to tendinitis in his knee, forcing him on the DL on two separate occasions.
The 31-year-old Panama native threw 11 pitches during a scoreless inning against Baltimore on Wednesday, but felt pain in the shoulder following the outing.
Mendoza struggled mightily in 37 games last year. He finished with a 3-5 record and a 6.75 earned run average in his first season with Boston.
In a related move, the Red Sox recalled left-handed pitcher Mark Malaska from Triple-A Pawtucket to take Mendoza's spot in the bullpen.
