Action Hero Championship Belt

Fun column from Simmons. I disagree with Eastwood in 1992 and Sylvester Stallone in 1996. Also no mention of The Rock (the movie not the star) and Gladiator is a little disappointing.

Ha.. I read this too. Great article.

I also disagree with Stallone in 96.

Should have been will smith from 95-96 with bad boys & Independence Day.. Or, go straight from Arnold in true lies to starting nic cage a year earlier and add the rock.

All 3 of those are better choices. I didn't even remember Stallone had a movie out that year.

Daylight wasn't even very good.. Not even for cheesy action movie standards. I think marginal action movies like eraser and cliffhanger are more entertaining, none of which are on the level of bad boys, Independence Day, or the rock.

Furthermore I think Mel gibson's run of 1995-braveheart, 1996-ransom, 1997-conspiracy theory probably deserves some credit in this era as well.

Though, those movies aren't quite action movies in the Stallone/Schwarzenegger vein.

To address your Eastwood in 1992 comment. It's tough to not recognize Wesley snipes' 1992-passenger 57, 1993-rising sun, 1993-boiling point, 1993-demolition man.. That's quite a run.

I'm not sure where 1993-cliffhanger fits in there. But, maybe snipes and Stallone can share 1993. What with them both being in demolition man together.

1992 belongs to Under Siege to me. I hate every other movie Segal has done but for some reason I love Under Siege. It really is a great action movie.

I think mid-90s has to go to Will Smith. Bad Boys and Independence Day established him as an action star, and without that foundation, you don't have the MiB, Enemy of the State, Wild West run that extended even into the mid-to-late 2000s with I Am Legend and Hancock. After Independence Day, he was hands down the signature action star of that era, making MiB, Enemy of the State and Wild West must-see moves in the theater.

I watch any action movie that comes on where Jason Statham is the star. Deserves higher recognition
Agreed.
and thumbs up to Uma Thurman for breaking into the boys club!
