Snake or Straight Draft in Returning Keeper League?

Postby Joe Kinlan » Wed Mar 05, 2014 8:30 am

Thanks in advance for any help. I've posted this at another forum to try to get as many responses as possible. I commish a returning 12 team keeper league. We had a snake draft when the league launched last year and have planned to use an annual straight draft (reverse order of previous season's final standings) moving forward. Each team keeps 6 out of 23. There is no auction and keepers are not associated with draft picks. Over the years I've been in 3 long running keeper leagues comparable to this one and they've all gone to straight drafts after the first season.

A manager has proposed we move our league back to a snake draft. Without getting into his more detailed reasons, I believe he feels the snake overcompensates as a handicap and/or that finishing in last place shouldn't necessary qualify a team for that handicap.

Most of the league members who chimed in prefer we keep the straight draft but this manager says a poll at another forum resulted 90% in favor of snake, tho he says he didn't specify the number of keepers or the fact that it is a returning league.

Ultimately I'll do whatever the majority of the league wants, But I've mostly taken it for granted that a returning keeper league with a medium-sized or bigger keeper stable should have a linear draft - and that this is basically the standard. Am I mistaken?

I'm guessing the one manager who wants a snake draft finished in the upper half of the standings last year ;-)
If you want a more competitive league, with managers who will stay for many years, go straight draft, not snake. That's what we use for all my keeper leagues.
Besides, if most of your managers would like straight, there's your answer.

Thanks, Grin. Really I'm more interested in whether a snake draft in this type of returning keeper league is more common than I thought.

Like I said I thought the generally established norm (excluding auctions and other formats) for a keeper league like this is a straight draft every year after a snake in the first season.

My long time keeper league has always done a snake draft. No one's ever suggested changing it afaik. I've kinda wondered if it's really that advantageous to get the first pick (and then wait a long time) if you finished last or not.

Any keeper or dynasty I run or partake in is always a straight draft aside from first year.

There is no hard fast rule, only those agreed on by the owners; however, you would be hard pressed to find many keeper leagues that snake draft. I don't think I would join one under normal circumstances.
There might be some cases when it would appropriate. If the number of keepers relative to the total number of players on each roster is low would be such a case. Using your league as an example, if you only had 3 or less keepers, you might then have a snake draft as you basically are re-drafting your roster every year.

You mention that everyone keeps 6 players, but you don't slot them and don't have salary caps. I might suggest that you reconsider this, particularly if I don't ever have to drop a player. All it takes is one owner to end up with Trout, Cabrera, Scherzer, ....etc for his 6 keepers and he just holds on for their entire careers, while the guy who came last place has to keep 6 middle of the road players in his first 6 draft positions. Anyway, that wasn't the question you asked, I just saw your comment and thought I would put in my 2 cents.

Back to your original questions, in your league a straight draft is normal with 6 of 23 being kept.

5 players each. And it's only 8 teams so there's still plenty of talent available in the draft.

A snake makes much more sense in a league where only 40 players are kept.
