What are you thoughts on him? He was a great prospect before Tommy John in 2001 I believe, he's starting in the Pirates rotation for the first time since. He's still young (26), he had a great spring (something like a 2.05 ERA) and his velocity is reaching mid 90s. He starts tomorrow vs. the Phillies, believe me I'm not recommending starting him, but I'm just pointing out that he is a sleeper to keep an eye on. If he starts the first 4 or 5 innings and is doing really well, pick him up and see if he will finally live up to his hype.
But, let me make this clear, I'm not recommending him - yet. So if he goes out and blows it tomorrow, I don't want 10 people come on this thread telling me how bad he sucks. Just thought I'd give you all a heads up to watch the game tomorrow. If you have any info on him, pass it on.

That does sound crazy ... Tommy John was around long before 2001.

Well his name catches my eye for this reason -
Was reading on a website (ESPN I think) about a scout who saw a ton of games this spring. He said the 2 most impressive pitching outings he saw all spring were by Jose Contrares and Vogelsong

Believe it or not I put him in my starting lineup before the season started, we change lineups weekly, just because of his dominant spring training. He was hitting the mid to high 90's all spring and struck out more than a batter an inning. I've heard nothing but good things about this guy.

That "scout" was actually a Yankees executive.

Why would that sound crazy?
I mean, I wouldn't trade Mussina for him but by all means Ryan is worth a look after his stellar Spring.
Nice sleeper.

Before I started researching him...it sounded crazy because he is the 4th starter on the Pirates. Enough said.

I've got him on my
Watch List in both my leagues in Yahoo. The one thing that scares me though is the Pirates' offense, but if this kid can continue his success from ST I should have no problem finding a spot for him on any of my rosters.

Point taken.
I suppose the key to using him will be targeting good matchups.

Yeah, I actually picked him up last night. I plan to start him against some of the weaker offensive teams, but only if he proves himself tonight. If he blows it tonight, I may just give up on him early...haven't decided if I'm going to give him a second chance.
