11th-Yr 16-Team Dynasty-like Points League needs 1 new owner

Postby Sultans of Squat » Sun Mar 02, 2014 7:10 am

The Beer & Pretzels Keeper Points League begins its 11th season and is currently looking for new owner(s) to take over 1 existing team(s) in our 16-team league ASAP.

If you're looking for a good, new challenge w/ a different setup than usual, this might be right up your alley.

The league is a free, points league run on Yahoo and uses (sabermetrics-oriented) Extrapolated Runs for offense, which is similar to Bill James' original Runs Created, and a variation on IP - R for pitching, which is a basic take on runs prevention (w/ some bonuses/penalties for wins, losses, saves, holds, blown saves and such). This points system is designed to model more closely to real life results (unlike standard Roto and most other points leagues) and has proven to yield excellent, tight races w/ well balanced results for 9 straight seasons now (and one more in a non-keeper before that). Rules are generally kept as simple (and sensible and consistent) as possible.

We do not use salaries, but keepability status is simply based on real life contract/FA status, eg. Cano, Choo, Ellsbury, Napoli, U Jimenez, E Santana, et al. are all FAs this year (and you can find pretty much all the noteworthy veteran FAs listed at places like the ESPN FA Tracker). And many top and/or MLB-ready prospects join the FA pool as they show up in Yahoo, eg. Byron Buxton, Masahiro Tanaka, Javier Baez, Kris Bryant, Carlos Correa, Maikel Franco, Addison Russell, Jose Abreu, et al. are all in the FA pool to start this year. Additional quality players like Josh Donaldson, Mat Latos, Gio Gonzalez have also been dropped to the FA pool as part of our relatively unique annual FA Draft Process (in order to gain better draft selections), which just began w/ the dropping of such players.

Our FA Draft Process is designed to help teams w/ less talent get competitive much more quickly while also adding a bit more strategy to such drafts than usual -- basically, the fewer keeper worthy talent you have, the more risk you can take in the silent player drops first part of the process to jockey into position for more early draft picks to nab as many top FAs (and dropped players) as possible. This part of the process just completed w/ the available team, Highlanders, (among several others) dropping all its players for instance.

Note that you may also find the points system and lineup positions can help teams rebuild and become competitive (again) more quickly since it depends less on certain traditional stats that tend to work against less proven players who may not bat in premium lineup spots or pitch on top teams.

For the complete rules and setup, check this link:

Intro and Rules to the League

If interested, fire me a PM or email or YIM me ASAP so you don't miss any additional parts of our relatively unique FA Draft process.

Currently, the only available team is the Highlanders, which already has all its players dropped in preparation for its much needed overhaul -- it will have the 1st pick of each draft round for the first 14 rounds in which only 5-6 teams have draft picks.

Again, please note that our league setup is a fair bit different from the usual, so don't judge the quality of players in the available team roster(s) w/out getting familiar w/ the setup and rules first. For instance, speed/SBs are nowhere near as important here as in standard ROTO leagues -- and we do not care about batting Rs and RBIs at all or pitching Ks (although some of those stats might provide helpful, indirect indicators of expected performance). And again, keepability is based on real life contract years and FA status, eg. Hamilton and Greinke are FAs this year. And there are other nuances to consider as well, so please do check out the entire setup and rules...

Thanks for your interest...

FYI, since processing of keeper selections, these quality players (among others) were added to the FA pool for the Draft:

Hanley Ramirez
David Wright
Giancarlo Stanton
Jose Reyes
Albert Pujols
Buster Posey
Hunter Pence
Ian Kinsler
Mark Trumbo
Alex Gordon
Josh Hamilton
Billy Butler
Elvis Andrus
Josh Donaldson
Carlos Beltran
Starlin Castro
Shane Victorino
Matt Adams
Asdrubal Cabrera

Justin Verlander
Hisashi Iwakuma
James Shields
Mat Latos
Zack Greinke
CJ Wilson
Mike Minor
Derek Holland
Jon Lester
Justin Masterson
Gio Gonzalez

And remember, the available Highlanders will have the 1st pick of each round for the first 14 rounds -- and those early rounds will only have 5-6 teams picking until the 14th round.

I'm interested in joining this league. I'm an accountant and love stats. I'm intrigued on the sabermetrics aspect of the scoring.

Let me know what the next step might be in order to join, and if the spot is still available.

Thanks!
