Auction League Bidding: In or Out?

Postby Smileyman9 » Sat Jan 25, 2014 11:00 am

Does anyone have anything in place to determine who is still bidding in an auction league draft? My league sits around a table, a team nominates a player, go around the table either increasing the bid or bowing out. We usually indicate whether or not a team is in via the "hold your hand up" method, but that tends to go south about 2 or 3 rounds in when teams are preoccupied talking amongst themselves to work out trades or researching players. Which leads to the repeated phrase of "are you in or out....whose in our out?"

I considered creating a light system, but that's just too much stuff on an already cluttered set of tables (between laptops, papers and food/beverages).

Thoughts?

After once around the table just have the last team that bid on the player say " Mike Trout $60 going once - going twice - going three times - sold " unless another bids then that owner gets the 'going once' etc.etc.

My league never used the "going around the table method". I like the "random yelling method" better. It speeds things up and when the bidding gets to the end use the "going once, going twice, sold" as the last poster said.

One auction league that I am in goes by the "in order" bidding and we all have flags to indicate whether in or not. The flags are placed in empty bottles and when you drop you take it down. Because you dont have to do anything until you take it down it generally goes well. Every once in a while towards the end we have to yell at everyone to set their flags when it gets to the end before the next bid, cause folks are tired.
We arrange the tables in either a straight line or a U shape so everyone can see.

I do both that and free for all and dont like one better than the other but there are some unique moments in the in order one when dealing with a showdown and if you care it avoids the slow roller of the open bidding (jumping in at last second). Sometimes the open auction lasts longer due to all the late jumps (but not ALWAYS)

Again though I like both!
