Fred McGriff to Detroit?

Postby Ry-Guy » Wed Apr 07, 2004 3:44 pm

Reports out of Detroit say that Fred Mcgriff's agent contacted the Tigers about dealing for the ageless slugger. After Dmitri Young went down, McGriff figured the Tigers could use his services at DH. I for one would love to see the Crime Dog reach 500 home runs. Why shouldn't Detroit give him a try and receive some nice publicity when he reaches his 500th as a Tiger?

It would be nice to see him here, as I'm a fan, but really they don't need him. They're bringing in Monroe to play LF and moving ronDL White to DH so he doesn't get beat up playing the field, so it's a pretty ideal replacement situation considering the Tiger's best slugger just went down.

I haven't heard anything about the Crime Dog coming to the motor city. I would like to see more of Monroe anyway since Bobby Pigginson is washed up.

I'd love to see the Crime Dog get 500. He's a great player. However, he'd probably hurt Detroit more than help them. They might as well give the young Chris Shelton some more PT before signing McGriff.

I know everyone's all excited about Monroe, but there's a reason he stayed on the bench last night and Greg Norton came in. Monroe sucks against righties. Last year he hit .209 with 9 HRs in 268 AB against them. He is ideally a platoon player.

Since I'm not real comfortable with the idea of Norton being the other half of that platoon, a good lefty bat like McGriff would be a nice addition.
