Cano/Puig trade?

Postby redsoxsucker » Mon Dec 09, 2013 3:55 pm

Hey all, would you trade a $6 Yasiel Puig for a $30 Robinson Cano?

These are my keepers - I get to keep 7 total. I have a bunch of OF options so in theory I could do it, but my team is so young and at such a great price, would you make this trade for a 31 year old Cano? My only interest is getting more talent in the infield position, while it may be another year or two before I really start winning with this core anyway.

Will Myers OF $7
Dominic Brown OF $4
Josh Donaldson 3B $4
Yasiel Puig OF $6
Bryce Harper OF $10
Daniel Nava $4
Jackie Bradley Jr. $4

James Shields $13
Matt Moore $16
Stephen Strasburg $10
Clay Buchholz SP $4
Shelby Miller SP $6

On a side note, would you trade a $6 Puig for a $13 Goldschmidt if I could get him to bite? Yes, right?

Not for Cano, but for Goldy ... most definitely!

I would prefer to not, but I'd rather move Myers than Puig. I think that $30-35 is Cano's ceiling. I'd be more likely to make that kind of move mid season rather than pre-draft.

Agreed. This seems like a deal I would do if I was pushing for a championship. You have a solid team but it isn't a "great" group of keepers. Don't get me wrong, you have a solid group of keepers that with the right draft, could get you there. I just wouldn't trade off your cheaper players that have the potential to be studs. You have a core of really good young cheap players that in a year or two could let you dominate. Harper, Miller, Myers, Moore and Puig. I wouldn't break that up unless you get something really good in return.

Interesting you include Moore. I really like Moore, but I wasn't thinking he was going to make the cut at $16 given I can keep 7 out of

Myers $7
Puig $6
Harper $10
Stasburg $10

and then 3 of these (TBD)
Donaldson $4
Brown $4
Shields $13
Miller $6

You like a $16 Moore better than two of these names?

Thanks for thoughts on Cano - I am inclined to agree overall

I would try to sell high on Donaldson if you could, but he and Shelby are easy keepers at those prices. I could see you keeping Shields over Moore, but with the money saved on your group of youngsters I think that you could play the upside card there.

You are right on Moore. Hadn't really looked at it like that, I was just looking at guys who I think will be studs in the coming years. I find it hard not to keep Donaldson, Brown and Miller. I am not a big fan of Brown but at $4, I am not sure I could let him go. Plus not sure that Moore goes for much more than $16 at auction. He kind of had a strange year and not sure what people will think of it.

I think I would try and combine Donaldson and Brown for a keeper. Then maybe keep Shields or Moore.

I would take Goldschmidt and Cano and call it a day.
