I see this as an overpay here. Just not a fan of what is gonna give you for 5 years at $85M. IT could vest to $100M. Way to much IMO. Thoughts?

first thing - this is AWESOME for my fantasy team. I don't think I could pick a better spot for McCann to land.

However I don't see anyway that McCann is a valuable player at the end of his contract. I'm not even sure he will still be worth starting. Perhaps the yearly value is high (I'm okay with it) but 5 yrs plus a vesting option is silly for a 30 yr old catcher that has had some injury issues already. He's going to end up being a 17M .740 OPS DH/1B. The Yankees seem to enjoy putting themselves in this position.

It is a strange move for the yankees since they absolutely need all of their payroll flexibility to stay under the luxury tax. They still need to sign 2-3 starters for their rotation and replace some of the offense that they lose from Granderson and Cano. Or find money to sign them. They have some money to play with but it could quickly disappear once they sign a couple of FA pitchers.

Whos to say he finishes that contract playing Catcher? Teix is a shell of his former self, and there's always DH.

At which point he will have declined to a .740 OPS 1Bman. That's gonna look awesome.

The Yankees rarely seem to have a long term plan. Their signings look to be based on a win-now philosophy and McCann fulfills that criteria.
If it's obvious it's probably true.

This is mainly what free agency has become. It's not too often where a huge building block becomes available. Especially since teams have wised up and started to sign their younger talent through their 20's.

I'm okay with the deal. He's going to be a nice fit there. I could see at least 2 more strong seasons from him.

The problem I have with it is that they have so many other needs that should be a higher priority IMO. He will hit is fair share of HR's in that park and can transition to 1B and DH, but the other needs that they have should make signing him a low priority not the highest.

I'm not sure he was their highest priority - only the one willing to come to an agreement the quickest. It seems the OFers they are pursuing are willing to play the market longer and Cano, unless they are willing to give him $300 million, is definitely going to let it drag on. Kuroda seems to be weighing Japan. Are they connected with any other SP's?

i dont see a problem with it at all. Its typical Yankees. They had a hole at catcher, so they went out and bought the best one available.
