Keepers before I trade

Postby Surfs up » Fri Oct 04, 2013 10:06 am

I won my AL only 12 team 5x5 auction league. We can keep only 8 players. I need to come up with a solid 8 and maybe try to trade a couple of players for a better player or a pick upgrade. The picks are used for minor leaguers or for players that didn't get drafted. I have four picks with my best being # 12.
I have Mike Trout and I plan of extending him by at least 4 years making him 25.00. Each year costs 5.00 . He's 5.00 now and extention can only be done once.
We have a 260.00 budget at the draft.
Here are my players with their contract next to their name.

Trout 5.00 Extending 4 years to 25.00
Donaldson 6.00
Iglesias 3.00
Shuck 1.00
Fielder 50.00
Reyes 41.00
Jackson 25.00
Pinto 1.00
Beckham 13.00
Barnes 1.00

Sonny Gray 8.00
Price 20.00 I have to keep or trade. He has a guaranteed contract.
Max 25.00
Straily 5.00
Cobb 8.00
Kluber 1.00
Lackey 1.00
Salazar 8.00
Uehara 1.00
Casey Janssen 1.00

My first thoughts are to keep Trout( no brainer ) Donaldson, , Iglesais , Cobb, Max, Price, Uehara, and either Lackey, Kluber or Janssen. Taking either of the last three pitchers would give me 89.00 so I would have 171.00 at the draft.
Thoughts or questions?

What happens if Price is traded to the NL? Do you lose him?

Max is Scherzer?
I would keep Kluber and Janssen over Lackey.

If Price gets traded to an NL team yes I lose him. And YES Max is Scherzer. Max is a very good value considering Darvich went for 25.00, Felix and Verlander went for 35.00.

Fielder is a bit expensive maybe trade him off for a cheaper option.

Trout 5.00 Extending 4 years to 25.00
Donaldson 6.00
Iglesias 3.00
Max 25.00
Cobb 8.00
Kluber 1.00
Uehara 1.00
Casey Janssen 1.00

I like this set as well. You can probably get Reyes and Fielder much cheaper in the auction...I suspect Reyes will only cost about half of that and Fielder probably about 30ish I wouldn't go over that. Good luck.

You don't know my league mates. Fielder and Reyes will go for close to the same amount next draft. I laugh sometimes when I see what some players go for in other AL only leagues. No way some of you would field a team in my league . At least one that would be competitive. Thanks for the help. ;-D

If someone pays $50 for Fielder they are doing you a favor.

There isn't a top hitter that will go under 40.00. Even Rios went for 29.00 and I think he is a little overrated. I paid 25.00 for Austin Jackson and he's really only a two category player. Michael Morse , Nelson Cruz and Beltre went for 34.00. Albert went for 49.00. Miggy went for 50.00. A closer. Mo Rivera went for 19.00. Yes they are over priced but if a manager has 8 keepers that can contribute that are fairly cheap he can spend 40.-50 on a player like Miggy or Fielder and still have a bunch of money to fillin his roster and be competetive. I know most of you think that's crazy to spend that kind of money on one player but it happens and happens several times every year.

Update. Looks like I'll be trading David Price ( 20.00 ) for a 6th round pick . Picks are used to select minor leaguers or players that were not drafted. In a 12 team Al only not much for major league players are left. And all players selected with a pick are automatically 5.00. I might be crazy to trade Price but I get nothing if he is traded to the NL in the off season. Plus this will allow me to keep another player much cheaper. Price has a guaranteed contract meaning he cannot be dropped without paying a penalty to the league of 25.00 real dollars. A guaranteed contract is when a player has his contract extended. I have Mike Trout at 5.00 because I selected him with a pick as a minor leaguers two years ago. I can keep him this year at 5.00 but he goes back to the draft pool next year. I will be extending his contract but not sure how much yet. Each year kept cost 5.00 per year. If I extend him four years he will be 25.00 toward my budget of 260.00 at this year draft.
