2014 Keepers - Please pick 7 off this great list!!

Postby redsoxsucker » Thu Oct 03, 2013 6:36 pm

HI all,

So, 2013 is in the books. I did not have a good year in my main keeper league but I knew it would be that way coming in based on my keepers, so I worked very hard to draft and make trades to better my team for 2014 and beyond. I am very pleased with the options I have here to pull from and am starting to think about who to keep.

I was horrible in power and K’s this year, but a lot of that could be from rest of team.

League is AL/NL mixed 5x5. $260 budget.

I have to pick 7 total players from my team to keep. I have started to identify who to keep and could use some advice

Likely keeping for certain (unless case is made to change my mind)
1. Will Myers OF $7
2. Stephen Strasburg SP $10
3. Bryce Harper OF $10
4. Yasiel Puig OF $6

I would then have to pull 3 from this group (or else one of these instead of one of top 4). As you can see I have fantastic price points on all of these options:
5. Shelby Miller SP $6 – great rookie year obviously. Hard to tell how much upside but price is so cheap
6. Dominic Brown OF $4 – how much of that year was real? More upside? Too cheap to pass up?
7. Clay Buchholz SP $4 – health?
8. Josh Donaldson $4 – a fluke? Maybe too cheap to pass up here
9. James Shields $13 - I like this price and him, but his age gives me fewer years than just how young rest of team is
10. Matt Moore $16 – maybe I could buy him again around this price? The money is still good but not nearly like others

Brown seems a great one yet would be 4th OF. I would keep him And Donaldson but there is so much good VERY cheap pitching there.

Any thoughts are appreciated – I have time but never too early to start thinking about this.

Thanks!

I'll admit that I'm not all that involved with budget leagues, so take my picks with a bit of a grain of salt. But I'd go...

Clay Buchholz - $4 for him is a steal if her remains healthy
James Shields - very reliable and will get you Ks
Josh Donaldson - good price at a shallow position, worth a shot for the production he provided this year

It's tough to pass up on Shelby Miller and Matt Moore at those prices. I don't like Brown, even at $4... and especially since you already have a full OF.

Here's my keeper questions if you have a chance: viewtopic.php?f=26&t=464237

Shields is a really nice price too but I think these guys give you the most value.

I agree on the value, while I have SO much value here that Shields at $13 seems just fine as well. As a Boston guy, I woudl like to keep Buchholz while I can't shake that he seems gimpy.

No one so far keeping Dominic Brown at $4...interesting.

Would others be willing to chime in on which 7 they might keep from this group?

Thanks - happy to return favor.

For the price, i like Bucholz, Donalson and Miller. I cant argue any of your other picks.

MadDog36 - did you put anything about this on your thread? I didn't see it and would like your input.

Anyone else? Seems to be some disagreement.

Also, in general, I think future is good on this team in terms of cost controlled potentially great players but would you guys be thinking you had a great base with 7 of these guys for 2014 or still too young to really have this be a great core until like 2016?

Buch Donaldson and Miller are your keepers in terms of talent and cost.

to me this is easy....there is no way I keep miller over the likes of moore or shields.....with that, Donaldson, moore and shields....now if you look at your $ spent with those 7 your looking at 66 bucks....you have an awesome start in pitching with stras, moore and shields... and you still have 194 bucks to stack your hitting come draft day..,..with those prices there is no way you take a ? in miller when a solid shields is 6 bucks more.....good luck ;-D

I agree. I don't really like Dom Brown. I acquired him in one league just to turn him around to another interested owner. I'm not super high on Buccholz either, but at that price you have to keep him.If I could package some combination of Brown, Miller (really needs a third pitch) & Buccholz together for a bat I would.
