First time keeper. Pick 6

Postby skjelstrom » Sat Sep 21, 2013 12:16 am

This is my first keeper league and so I'm not sure what I should do. Its a 10 team league head-to-head with the usual lineup and stats except with BB, Triples, H instead of AVG, QS, CG, HLD, and K/9 instead of K. $260 yearly budget. You can keep 6 players.

I have TONS of good $1 options that I could take all $1 players and still be loaded with talent. But should I take some of the higher end players as well?

Viable Options:
Jason Kipnis - $20
Josh Donaldson - $1
Jean Segura - $1
Billy Hamilton - $1
Starlin Marte - $1
Julio Teheren - $1
Shelby Miller - $1
Jose Fernandez - $1

On the Fence:
Wilson Ramos - $1
Jason Heyward - $29
Mat Latos - $17
Zach Grienke - $21

Not Likely:
Justin Upton - $30
Prince Fielder - $39
Giancarlo Stanton - $41
Matt Harvey - $4

EDIT: Keeper rules: It has been established that the first year after they are drafted you keep the player for the drafted price. Every year after that the price goes up by $5/year. The league draft salary is $260 every year.

Need a little help here. My initial thoughts are to keep all $1 players because I have a plethora of them worth keeping and just being a high spender next year. But like I said this is my first time so I need opinionssss! Thanks :-B

Usually in these small leagues you want to keep some expensive stars because there will be so many $1 PLAYERS TO BE HAD LATER. bUT IN THIS CASE YOUR STARS REALLY AREN'T GREAT VALUE so you could be ahead in keeping the $1 ones instead. Greinke could be ok, I'd hold off on dropping Harvey until we know more. I'd keep the first 4 $1 PLAYERS LISTED and Fernandez for sure

Those four definitely. The rest depend on the keeper rules. How long can you hold someone? Do salaries increase every season? This is useful when placing a value on Harvey. I have him for $10 next season in my $260 league (+$5 each season). I am likely going to hold him.

I'm surprised neither of you chose Shelby Miller or Julio Teheren.

This was our first year that we stated we would be changing to keeper league so it's kind of been experimental so far. As far as we have laid out you can keep 6 players every year indefinitely and the price won't change. We have talked about a +$5 each season but as of right now that's not in effect.

And if I may ask why Donaldson? Many people like him as a keeper but I don't see the appeal. I mean I really liked him this year, but wouldn't Billy Hamilton, Shelby Miller, or Julio Teheren have more value in the long run?

Thanks for the input guys!

starting pitching is just so deep most owners prefer to use most of their keeper spots for hitters and especially power hitters. SP tend to be hit and miss, especially young SP can follow up a great year with a lesser season.

BUMP. It's getting closer to decision time and now that it's closer to spring training and rankings are out I wanted to reevaluate my keepers. Also the keeper rules are set and stone at an increase of $5 after the first year kept. What do you guys think?

My thoughts now are:
Fernandez - $1
Segura - $1
Marte - $1
Hamilton - $1
Kipnis - $20
