Trade Veras? (in a playoff push)

Postby Knights » Thu Jul 25, 2013 10:39 am

16-team 6x6 H2H keeper league.

My team is right in the midst of a playoff push. I just lost K-Rod as a closer, but I was quick enough to add both Jim Henderson and John Axford for security (I have Edward Mujica as my main closer).

Jose Veras is my other closer. There is talk of him being dealt (and presumably losing the closer role)... so I'm torn between trying to quickly shuffle off Veras to a team that is desperate for closers in return for a mid-round draft pick (in hopes that he might go for it as a chance for saves at a very minimal price) or holding on to him for the off-chance that he stays in Houston.

But am I dumb for looking for a mid-round pick while in the middle of a playoff push, when any saves that Veras gives me if he remains in Houston could be critical for me through the fantasy playoffs? It just seems so clear cut that the Astros should deal Veras while they can get something for him, but those kind of assumptions are what has killed fantasy teams in the past.

This is one of those keeper league conundrums... playing for this year while also looking ahead to the future.

What do you think I should do?

Here's my roster:

Tough one. I have Veras in both my teams too. People were so down on Houston that he was an afterthought on draft day and that his good season has gone largely unnoticed, throw in the trade risk and it's been tough to find good value for him. Also I'm sure Houston would love to trade him, but they'll need to get something out of him or they might try to keep him and resign. They have no one else that's anywhere close to having extended success as a ML reliever, so if they don't get much they might even just hang on to him.

If you feel really strongly that he's gone, I would trade him. If you're like me and think it's close to 50/50 or even 60/40 then I might end up hanging on to him because I think my potential trade partners are underestimating his value.

Yep I would. He's got minimal value. He'll likely be traded, but the relief market contrary to what some have said is rather flush compared to others...

What other RP are available. I would consider adding Strop if you want some insurance, Ziegler maybe as well for some short term saves. You can always deal BN Daniel Nava (Bos - 1B,LF,RF) for a solid not spectacular closer. Rex Brothers just re-inherited the closer role, see how things are.
