Balfour or Jim Johnson RoS?

Postby Ehlana » Mon Jul 08, 2013 10:44 am

TL;DR: Who would you rather have as a closer: Jim Johnson or Grant Balfour?

So with Jim Henderson pitching the 7th inning (what the hell MIlwaukee?) and Andrew Bailey losing his closing gig to Koji Uehara I find myself in need of a closer.

I offered V. Martinez for Balfour and it was countered with Martinez and Simmons for Jim Johnson. The question is: Who would you rather have, Johnson or Balfour? I have Mauer, so Martinez isn't important to me, and Simmons is my third SS behind Segura and Reyes. Neither Martinez or Simmons would be a keeper for me, and the guy I'm trading with is in last place so there's little concern of improving his team more than I improve mine

League: 8 Team, Points, Keep 5 Players.
Scoring:

Offense: 1 pt per base, runs, rbis, walks, HBP. 2 pts for SB. -1 pt for CS and Ks.

Pitching: 1250 inning limit, 1 pt per out/k, 7 pts win, 3 pts QS, 8 pts save, 5 pts CG, 10 pts SO, -5 loss, -1 BB/hit/ER. Note that closers have much higher PPIP (~8) than a SP (~3.5), so closers are important, and hoarded as a result.

C (1): Mauer
1B (1): Goldschmidt
2B (1): Cano
3B (1): Longoria
SS (1): Segura
OF (4): Bautista, Carlos Gonzalez, McLouth, Holliday
Util (2): Ortiz, Reyes
Bench: V. Martinez, Carpenter, Ichiro, Seager, Simmons, Fowler

SP (4): Bumgarner, Scherzer, H. Bailey, Ryu, Buchholz, Cobb, Lincecum, Greinke, Millone
RP (2): Rivera, Nathan, A. Bailey, Henderson, Tazawa
P (1): Always filled by closer (see scoring for reasons)

Where does JJ come into this? Do you have to deal for him as well? If so what would it cost you?

I would probably take Balfour but neither is a sure thing. I like the A's to get more wins.

If I had to choose between both in a vacuum, Balfour. He's having a monster year, and while closers from one year to the next are flukey, when they're having an on year, they're having an on year. Both closers get plenty of save opportunities though. I'd rather see you do VMart for Balfour, but Simmons is nothing special either. Really, I'd say either move is pretty alright on your part.

I'd say they're both pretty close. FIP, SIERA, and xFIP of the two say they've pitched pretty similarly. Balfour's got a bit higher k/9, but Johnson has a little less competition (O'Day's sub-arm style makes him less likely to be the long-term closer for an old-school manager) and his team has given a remarkable amount of save chances the last 1.5+ seasons.

Also I wouldn't let a throw-in like Simmons be the reason you didn't get a closer you wanted.

A little help with mine?

I would take the Jim Johnson trade, be happy you upgraded your closers and call it a day. I mean plus this opens a free spot. What is available?

Jim Johnson comes in b/c he wants to give me Jim Johnson and I want Balfour, but I'm not sure it's a big enough deal. If he holds firm on Johnson I think I'd likely take it since neither of the guys I'm giving up is starting for me. I may even see if giving him Mauer instead of Victor Martinez is enough to get him to part with Balfour.
