Will Braun be the Braun of old or should I sell now? WHIR

Postby chadeboy18 » Mon Jul 08, 2013 10:37 am

I have a few guys on my team that I am nervous about for the 2nd half. The one I am worried most about is Ryan Braun. I am in a standard ROTO 5x5 redraft and am in 1st place. Should i be ready to put Braun in my lineup and reap the rewards or should I be nervous and try and sell now. I am also nervous about Big Papi who hasn't had a full and solid 2nd half in a few years. What do you think of these guys?

I was thinking of proposing trades such as
-Braun and Aybar for Gomez and Castro.
-Braun for Wainwright or Felix
-Braun and Gregg for Hanley and Cain

Batters
C Matt Wieters
1B David Ortiz
2B Jose Altuve
3B Evan Longoria
SS Erick Aybar
OF Shin Soo Choo, Adrian Gonzalez, Giancarlo Stanton
UTIL Ben Revere, Anthony Rizzo
BN Brandon Moss
BN Leonys Martin
DL Ryan Braun

Pitching

SP Jordan Zimmerman
Mat Latos
Zach Greinke
Homer Bailey
Alexi Ogando
Erasmo Ramirez
RP Rafael Soriano
Greg Holland
Kevin Gregg
Koji Uehara

Hang onto Braun.
-Braun and Aybar for Gomez and Castro.
-Braun for Wainwright or Felix
-Braun and Gregg for Hanley and Cain

#1 isn't enough
#2 isn't enough you need a quality player with one of those arms.
#3 is better but you can do better than Matt Cain.

It really depends on what you can get for him. I drafted him 3rd overall in the first year of a new keeper league and I'm not super anxious to deal him, but if someone came along and offered value I'd at least consider it.

I don't think I'd make any of those three trades though. Castro's (assuming that's starlin?) moderately horrific, and while Gomez is hot with Braun coming back Gomez is likely to drop in the order again. I don't think you really need Wainwright or Felix Hernandez either. The last one is kind of interesting though. Not sure the other owner would go for that. You could try it though.

It's tough to get good value for someone in Braun's position. I'd be inclined to hold onto him and maybe sell him after he's shown what he can do for a couple weeks.

I'm not worried about Ortiz, and with Adrian Gonzalez on your roster you should be either. If something does happen to Ortiz, you can just slide Braun into the OF and move Gonzalez to 1B.

See if you could pull Felix, or Wainwright for Braun. All he could do is reject the offer.

What if I got Strasburg and Rosario for Braun and Wieters? Is Rosario as jump up from Wieters? And is Braun worth Stras?

If you're currently in first place without him, I'd look at getting Wainwright or Felix for him. He could come out like the Braun of old, but he makes me nervous.

LOTS of risk with Braun right now, but there's also lots of reward. He was hitting pretty well with the hurt paw, so if it's truly healthy I have no reason to doubt he'll be the Braun of old. Still, there's that injury risk plus the biogenesis risk.

All of that said, I wouldn't trade Braun right now for just an elite SP. I value elite hitters much more than elite pitchers and Braun has consistently been one of the top hitters in the game. He's one of the few players likely to carry a fantasy team for months at a time. If I could get another hitter that I thought had less risk, I might do that. If I could get an elite pitcher plus either a decent hitter or an upgrade at another position (a 4-person trade), I would do that. I don't think a Wainwright would be a terrible bounty for Braun, but especially since you're in first without him already I would want to wait for the upside of the top-3 hitter or to get paid a bit more for him.

A little help with mine?
