Felix and Verlander were not available in FA and Greinke isn't as good as Lee. If it were as simple as just throwing a pile of money into FA then it wouldn't make sense to trade a top prospect for Lee but it isn't. Next year's FA class has Garza, Burnett and JJohnson in it. None of these guys are close to Cliff Lee's tier of pitchers. If you want an ace then you will probably have to trade a top prospect or two. It shouldn't need to be Bogaerts but it should be a really good prospect but it looks like they will go after Peavy now.

They signed away their FA seasons, it wasn't arb years or anything that drove the price down. Point is that there's no value there. These guys don't come up as FA very often, but Lee was a FA a couple years ago. Nobody, including the Red Sox, offered a 31 year old Cliff Lee more than $22.5M/yr so what makes you think they'd add in a top prospect and take on the heavily back-loaded portion for the now 34 year old? If the Phillies can get a big prospect for him, they should do it in a heartbeat. They might get a fringe prospect but my original point was to laugh at Amaro's suggestion that he would take no less than 3 of a team's top prospects.

They still weren't available for everyone to sign. And there is definitely not anyone close to Lee to sign next offseason. It was backloaded but this isn't the Buehrle contract that we are talking about. 25M/yr for an elite pitcher is not ridiculous.

He's 35 at the end of august. He's still human, 25 million a year is way too much. If the phillies can get someone to take his entire contract they should take the deal. And it's 25m/yr for the next two years. Then 27.5 million for a pitcher in his age 37 season.

Alden Gonzalez of MLB.com reports that the Angels are unlikely to trade Erick Aybar.
The Angels briefly talked about Aybar with the Cardinals, but they quickly fizzled out. While the Angels would love to land a pitcher, they are reluctant to move Aybar because shortstops are harder to replace. With that in mind, Gonzalez hears that second baseman Howie Kendrick remains in play in trade talks. However, One interesting wrinkle is that Kendrick can block trades to 12 teams in 2013

but they just traded for someone who can play SS in Grant Green, who can't play 2B if Kendrick is not traded.

These were the talks that quickly fizzled out:

STL: "Hey, we'd like to discuss an Aybar deal."
LAA: "Cool. We'd have to get either Carlos Martinez or Michael Wacha back in a deal."

Moar! I need more trades! So quiet so far today. I'm sure we'll still have the last-minute flurry of relievers changing hands, but it's been dull so far.

Wait...what? Rotoworld:

FOX Sports' Ken Rosenthal reports that the Rangers would consider dealing right-hander Matt Garza.

It's a pretty surprising report, as the Rangers just acquired Garza from the Cubs last week for a package of prospects. However, Rosenthal hears that they are willing to be open-minded regarding virtually all of their players. The Rangers are still in the mix and Garza should help the rotation, so it's unlikely a deal comes together.

I don't know...sounds pretty smart to me. Of course a deal for him isn't likely but if you get blown away, anyone is trade-able.

Of course, but teams still say that someone is untouchable if there's nothing in the region of reasonableness that will get a deal done. When the White Sox were saying that they wouldn't consider trading Chris Sale, they didn't mean that an offer of Mike Trout would get rejected out-of-hand (and everyone understands this). I just can't imagine what sort of plausible deal is being imagined here.

Ian Kennedy moved to the Padres for reliever Joe Thatcher, a minor league reliever (Matt Stites), and a compensatory draft pick (round B).

Bud Norris to the Orioles.
The Orioles have acquired Bud Norris from the Astros for L.J. Hoes, prospect Josh Hader and a draft pick, according to FOX Sports' Ken Rosenthal.
Baltimore did its shopping on the cheap this year, acquiring Norris, Francisco Rodriguez and Scott Feldman without relinquishing a top prospect. The 28-year-old Norris has a 3.93 ERA through 21 starts this year and is under team control through 2015.

Justin Maxwell to the Royals.
Royals acquired OF Justin Maxwell from the Astros for RHP Kyle Smith.
Maxwell is batting just .241/.311/.387 through 40 games this season, but he owns an .824 career OPS against left-handed pitching. He figures to be used on the short side of a platoon in right field alongside David Lough.

I feel disappointed, like, that's it? I guess I was expecting many more deals.
