Mariners fan here. There's still hope for this guy, but I don't think it's going to come together this year. We're an extremely patient fanbase (getting less so by the day,) so he'll likely be back there unless he really starts to struggle, and it becomes glaringly apparent it's time to bring M. Zunino up and option Montero down. Montero's future isn't at catcher. He's a DH, or a 1B at best.
Funny, I was just thinking about what a terrible trade for both teams the Montero/Pineda deal turned out to be. Why couldn't the Yankees have dealt Montero to the Mets for Matt Harvey or to the Cards for Shelby Miller?
Hindsight's always 20/20, and we both ended up whiffing on that trade. The trade kind of made sense at the time, though. Pineda was a proven MLB commodity, a big, power arm, making 28 starts in 2011 and posting a sub-1.1 WHIP, 3.15 SO/BB, and made the AL All-Star team. Pitchers are so hard to project, so who's to know that M. Harvey or S. Miller would end up working out? Montero was a top offensive prospect, which was what the Mariners' front office felt they needed. It's just not working out, on either side.
