Anyone i mean anyone believing in Montero

Postby MadDog36 » Mon May 20, 2013 11:56 pm

I'm talking about the Seattle catcher. Is there anyone that is still a believer in him? He has been hitting a little better recently. Trying to debate between him or dealing Beachy/Wood/Cashner for a marginal catcher like Martin or Vmart.

I'm not a believer. He has marginal power, no speed, he's a terrible defender, has no plate discipline, and misses plenty of games. I see no reason for him to be on your roster.

Yeah, a complete dud in fantasy & the real thing. I don't know that VMart or Russ Martin are much better though. Surely with all the mediocre C throughout the league you can find something similar to those two on the WW?

Funny, I was just thinking about what a terrible trade for both teams the Montero/Pineda deal turned out to be. Why couldn't the Yankees have dealt Montero to the Mets for Matt Harvey or to the Cards for Shelby Miller?

Feedback on mine would be appreciated...

In my main $$ league I just made a deal for Mauer as I could not take Montero anymore.

Mariners fan here. There's still hope for this guy, but I don't think it's going to come together this year. We're an extremely patient fanbase (getting less so by the day,) so he'll likely be back there unless he really starts to struggle, and it becomes glaringly apparent it's time to bring M. Zunino up and option Montero down. Montero's future isn't at catcher. He's a DH, or a 1B at best.

Hindsight's always 20/20, and we both ended up whiffing on that trade. The trade kind of made sense at the time, though. Pineda was a proven MLB commodity, a big, power arm, making 28 starts in 2011 and posting a sub-1.1 WHIP, 3.15 SO/BB, and made the AL All-Star team. Pitchers are so hard to project, so who's to know that M. Harvey or S. Miller would end up working out? Montero was a top offensive prospect, which was what the Mariners' front office felt they needed. It's just not working out, on either side.

It hurt a lot to trade him 4 yrs ago in a dynasty. It hurts less now and it's driven me to trade nearly all of my prospects for veterans.

The trade that has defined my dynasty team - Votto/Holland for Montero/Billingsley/Drabek - this got panned on another forum because Votto didn't look like he would be better than a 3rd rd'er ever and 'it would take time' for Holland to turn out.

Another Mariners fan he and I can't agree more. If the Mariners do bring Up Zunino expect Montero to get even less playing time as he would have to split DH/1B playing time with Morales and Smoak.

Good thing we have four adequate 1st basemen! (Morse is not an outfielder.) :-[
