a must see ... Money on the bench

Strikeout Tracking.
Randy Johnson struck out 334 batters in 2002. That is the last time a major league pitcher topped 300 strikeouts.
So far in 2013, Yu Darvish has started eight games. He has 80 strikeouts. If he makes the major league standard 33 starts this year, that would be 330 strikeouts. I don't know if that will happen. (I never know anything. If I did we wouldn't need this column.)
As to Darvish, first, his numbers are appreciably better this year, so we might expect regression. But then, he's throwing his slider a lot more, so maybe that's it. He's 26, so he might still get better.
No one has come close to 300 Ks in recent years. Darvish is certainly the most intriguing candidate thus far, and we'll be keeping an eye on him.

Chris Carter, 57 Ks, 231 K pace: Carter really slowed down substantially this week, but he's still on pace to break the single-season record while providing solid offensive value.
Rickie Weeks 42 Ks, 184 K pace: Striking out 200 times is hard. Not everyone can do it. It's looking like Weeks might not have what it takes. He gets one more week to show us he's up for the challenge.
Adam Dunn, 46 Ks, 201 K pace: Sure, Adam Dunn is down a little, but he's still keeping the pace. His hitting line continues to be anemic, though. He needs to do better.

It’s time for the updated catcher ranks

My opponent has Hamels, I'm rolling out Iwakuma, and I'm going to Busch to watch Shelby.

Cleveland hitters have just been very smart with two strikes on, Hamels just throws junk until 3-2, then he finally throws a strike. He's really wasting his time nibbling and throwing two strike balls because they aren't biting. I hope he continues it and is out of there after 5 innings.

Hamels looks like dogsh*t. Nibbling, flipping balls up there like he is Ted Lilly or something and getting rocked. Huge disappointment so far this season. Can only hold on and hope he gets it together I guess.

I'm thinking Justin Morneau might be a monster RHP platoon for the rest of this season. Yes, I know, and grass is green, and the sky is blue. This year, though, he's actually been passable vs LHP too. So let's say you implement some Morneau/Garrett Jones 1B platoon all vs RHP. If you have a day where both Jones and Morneau are facing a LHP, Morneau hasn't been that dreadful, and you could potentially produce some A+ results. With A-Gonz sitting in my Util spot, and Fielder at 1B, I'm going to see if I can't give that a try and see how far it will take me in my points league. Threw out an offer of A-Gonz for Sandoval, since 3B is a black hole for me right now with Prado and Lawrie.
