Help me pick 2-3 relievers - WHIR

Postby timgair » Wed May 01, 2013 10:49 pm

So this is my pitching staff at the moment. 12 team roto, standard 5x5.

Clayton Kershaw
Stephen Strasburg
Lance Lynn
Alex Cobb
Ervin Santana
Shawn Marcum
Jeremy Hellickson

Fernando Rodney
Santiago Casilla
Jared Burton

These are the guys available on the wire right now...

Jordan Walden
James Russell
Sean Marshall
Joe Smith
Rex Brothers
Joaquin Benoit
Ryan Cook
Mike Adams
Mark Melancon
Tanner Scheppers
Steve Delabar

I'm thinking of cutting Hellickson & Alex Avila to make room for 2 of these guys. Avila isn't needed as I have C.Santana. What would you do? If I picked up 2 of these relievers, which two would you pick?

pfffft pickings are a bit slim. Your league isn't counting holds so they would be there strictly for era/whip?? Or is this more of a speculate hope they become closer later on?? If your hoping for them to get saves eventually I'd probably be picking up Cook/Benoit I guess, both guys have spent time as a closer with fair success. If the goal is more just to lower ERA/Whip just look at picking up the hot hand. Scheppers is the top set up guy and I believe just allowed his first run on the season yesterday.
As to dropping Avila and Hellickson I'd be fine dropping both but if there is any offensive talent on the wire I'd probably snag them before any of those relievers.

Very slim pickings. There are a number of reasons I'm making this move.

Hellickson just isn't a roto guy. He doesn't typically strike out enough batters to be valuable in roto. I drafted him because he was the best pitcher left on the board late. He's gotten beat up his last two starts. I feel like it makes more sense to go with a combination of a few middle relievers/ set up guys to keep my strikeouts high enough to compete in that category. I might be able to squeak out a save or two here and there as well. I'll have to wait til someone is way ahead in the saves category before I can trade for another closer or two. In the mean time, I figure this is the way to go.

By the way, I'm last in saves right now with 3. The guy in 11th place has 11 putting me 8 behind. I'm falling behind so quickly in that category that I may have to just punt it anyway. I figure I might as well try to lower the ERA & WHIP as much as possible while trying to increase my Ks per 9.

It just doesn't make sense for me to have Hellickson eating up innings for a chance at 10 wins from him.

Ya, it might be the best option to go the middle reliever route but just something to keep in mind when you go with middle relievers for their K potential quite a few of those heavy K guys like Brothers sometimes end up with an inflated whip. Idk if you want K's I'd probably end up going with Walden, Marshall, or Brothers.

For ERA, WHIP, and K:

Melancon and Delabar.

Melancon may be the closer if the Pirates falter and they trade Grilli.

Help with mine:

Melancon and Benoit are who I'd take. Benoit will still get a few SV opportunities.

If you're not interested in SV (just looking ERA WHIP K) then substitute Benoit for Cook.

I'd go Cook and Benoit. I had Benoit in my H2H league and enjoyed the week I had him. An occasional save and never really blew up my ERA (Wish I would have kept him over Brett Anderson... ugh). Im with you about dropping Jeremy though.
