I haven't read the books but I loved the finale, probably my favorite finale so far because it feels like the entire series has been setting up the moment that Verys and Littlefinger take out the Lannister's. They didn't even need the Verys flyover, they did a great job of showing the viewer that they basically setup Tyrion to kill Tywin, everything before hand was setup for that exact moment where the only person who would and could kill the power behind the throne did just that. To me, it was the most pivotal part of the whole series if I'm understanding it right where the people who were plotting the game finally got their guy.

In the books, Varys leads Tyrion along the secret passageways, leading to the Tower of the Hand. You get the sense Varys wants Tyrion to kill Tywin as part of some master plan of his, even if he protests.

In the series, Varys sounds surprised by what Tyrion had done, as if it wasn't planned. Well, he plans Tyrion's escape but then, the funny bit is he decides to board the ship with Tyrion.

And yes, I thought the show runners botched the ending segment with Tyrion, Tywin, Jaime, and Varys.

I'm with you on this one. Now the question is why would Varys want Tywin dead? Sure, Tywin was an ass, but he was a competent and predictable ruler. Varys has most certainly thought this through, so he knows Cersei takes over. Now why would Varys want Cersei in charge? hmmmmm... :-D
