Matt Moore's Hatred of the 8th Inning

Postby Y`s Guy » Wed Apr 17, 2013 11:13 pm

In 2012 Matt Moore started 31 games. In 13 of them he actually pitched in the 7th inning. In two games he got into the 8th.

This season he hasn't gotten through the 7th yet.

Love the kid but would really like to see him log some 7 inning games.

It is going to take either a major shift in pitch efficiency from Moore or a more lenient pitch count limit from the manager (and/or organization) for that to be much of reality. I would guess that at some point as he matures the team will be more willing to give him more than 110 pitches a game.

No you don't want to see him go into the 8th inning with a high pitch count.

Problem is Moore still has too much lack of control. So with his walks and deep counts, his pitch count gets elevated. If left in lat ein games, he either hurts his arms or gets shelled, both things you don't want to have happen. Let the best pitching coaches in baseball handle Matt Moore's arm.

He needs to decrease his foul tip count.

I should invest in a baseball package so I can watch him. I know his pitch counts are crazy by the 5th inning most of the time. Here's hoping he turns a corner.

2013:

Start#1 6 IP, a win, 100 pitches, 59 strikes (2 hit allowed, 3 walks)
#2 5.1 IP, a win, 106 pitches, 54 strikes ( 1 hits allowed, 6 walks)
#3 6.2 IP, a win, 104 pitches, 67 strikes ( 5 hits allowed, 3 walks)
#4 8 IP, a win, 117 pitches, 73 strikes (2 hits allowed, 3 walks)
#5 6 IP, a win, 101 pitches, 61 strikes ( 3 hits allowed, 1 walk)

528 pitches, 314 strikes...59.46% strike pct

Only 5 baserunners allowed through 6 innings, and it took him 98 pitches. To be honest, I'd be pretty happy with that all season. Might lose a win or two, but since every pitching stat in a roto league is basically on a per-inning basis, going one less inning per game is in a way a bonus. He probably wouldn't be able to maintain that K-rate if he attacked the zone more and went deeper into games.

Yep I'm quite content with this as well.
