Next SP's to be promoted?

Postby TheGhost » Tue Apr 16, 2013 9:21 pm

Just wondering if anyone has any thoughts on which pitchers might be promoted to the big leagues soon? Not necessarily who the top prospects are... but who will be promoted soon due to injury, poor performance, etc. Already missed out on the young arm in the Reds system. Thanks!! ;-D

Off the top of my head I would look at Detroit where Rick Porcello is really reall bad. In AAA the Tigres have Shawn Hill doing pretty good so far after 4 starts. Unless they trade for someone Hill could be a guy. But not sexy at all.

Straily is the first one to come to mind. Although he may already be taken.

Rafael Montero from the Mets. He's in AA right now but he was being considered to replace Neise if he missed a start. 1.59 era/.706 whip. 27 k, 1 bb through 22.2 innings. So if an injury hits the mets he may be the choice before Wheeler.

Are we looking for guys that might be league average or are we looking for the next lottery ticket that is actually worth picking up?

Kyle Gibson should be up in May or maybe June but you will probably be lucky to get a 4.00 ERA out of him as a rookie.

What's Gerrit Cole's timetable? June/July to avoid Super 2 or will the Pirates get antsy before then?

Same story for Zack Wheeler and the Mets.

Skaggs and Hultzen are a few top prospects that should be up this year.

Here's a nice list to research top prospect ETA's. http://www.minorleagueball.com/2013/3/1 ... hn-sickels

I think Cole is a late season callup, September?

-Pirates never rush there prospects.
-Liriano/Morton/Karstens are ahead of him (health permitting) on the depth chart.

I think Wheeler is the next big thing to come up,

HOWEVER today the Cards called up Martinez but it looks like he will be used in the bullpen atleast to start it off, never know tho, with Westbrook.

there've been recent rumblings about Kevin Gausman being up soonish. Probably June with the other big call ups.

Actually the other way around regardless of their past history. Cole will be up before Wheeler. It's easier to play the super 2 game if you're below .500. If you are 17-12 then it's difficult to continue to put terrible starters out there.

no reason to rush Cole.

Liriano could be this years AJ Burnett. right now in AAA he has 11 IP, 8 H, 2 ER, 17 K ..and 0 walks.
Karstens is also an above average pitcher.

rotoworld has a write up saying Kyle Gibson could be up soon, if he continues to be dominant in AAA. I'm thinking wow he must be doing great. then they show the numbers, and I'm thinking.. sorry, that's not dominant.
Baseball America's Jim Shonerd says Kyle Gibson could be an option for the Twins if he continues to string together a few more dominant starts at Triple-A Rochester.
The Twins are usually on the conservative end of promotions, but Gibson would provide an immediate upgrade to a starting rotation that currently lacks any viable starters. In six Triple-A starts, Gibson has a 4.26 ERA with a 7.7 SO/9 and 1.29 WHIP. After missing most of 2012 due to Tommy John surgery, Gibson is expected to be on a 130-140 innings limit this season.
