Statistically speaking, you should have your best hitter batting second or 4th. The number 4 hitter has the most important situations, but the number two hitter has more plate appearances.
Edit: I knew there was an interesting article on this. I just found it. Expanding on this, the most important positions in the lineup are (in order): 4th, 2nd, 1st, 5th.
