How do you decide to start/sit a SP?

Postby Emerald City Blues » Wed Apr 03, 2013 12:33 pm

Here's a perfect example. 04/03/2013. Latos is starting a tough Angels lineup. CJ Wilson faces a tough (IMO) Reds lineup. I own both Latos (CIN) and CJ Wilson (@LAA).

How do you decide whether to start/sit either of these guys? My gut says to just sit both of them - its early in the season & I can make up innings later. BUT, I hate sitting two of my top pitchers.

What kind of metrics, matchup evaluations do you use to make this decision? What other considerations do you take into account?

Why would you sit either of them?

Those are two middle-top tier pitchers. You shouldn't be benching them ever.

True, which is why I hesitate to bench either....but then I look at things like Latos' career ERA for April (5.73 according to yahoo) combined with a sick Angels lineup...there's more than enough room for doubt and a justifiable reason for a "spot bench"....

I'm definitely starting Latos. Heck he is my #3 in my rotation.

Agree with the others. You have to start your top guys each time. You can always find a reason to bench a SP, but if its one of your top guys your going to miss out on a lot.

I do however spot start low tier guys and SP off the waiver wire. I factor in yahoo matchup ratings, stadium, hot/cold streak of both the SP and opponent, and the teams left/right splits relative to the SP

I don't see how you could sit either of those guys ever really. I'm not big on CJ but he's still a must start if you own him I think. Latos has been known to give things up early in the season but you still can't sit him. I'm definitely in the camp of always starting your studs and spot starting low tier guys according to matchups and what I need to win the week.
