Interesting: Hanley Ramirez placed on 15 day DL...

Mar 31 Dodgers placed SS Hanley Ramirez on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to March 22, with a torn ligament in his right thumb.
Advice: It's just a procedural move, as Ramirez underwent surgery earlier this week and is unlikely to make his season debut until late-May. The Dodgers will go with Justin Sellers at shortstop until he returns.

We were told Hanley's rehab would take two months, so naturally I assumed he was straight on the 60-day DL.
However the Dodgers have put him on the 15-day DL.....AND made it retroactive?

Something could be up here. Might be worth putting buying feelers out for him.

This doesn't mean anything, teams can place players on the 15 day DL and easily shift them over to the 60 day DL (only expense is counting him on their 40 man roster?) if he's definitely going to be out far longer. I can't think of an example where the player's official time table was out 2 months and he was placed on the 60 day DL, normally just guys obviously out until like the all star break.

Yup. 60 day DL is hardly used except for guys out for significant periods of time.

And I'm pretty sure every DL stint is automatically retroactive to the last MLB game they played. There would be no benefit to putting a guy on non-retroactive DL.

The only reason to put him on the 60 day DL is that they need room on the 40 man roster.

The 60 day DL would rule out a mid-may return which they probably don't want to do.
