Jose Fernandez gets the call!

Postby paisano1 » Sun Mar 31, 2013 10:33 am

Big time prospect here. He posted a 14-1 record and 1.75 ERA over 25 total starts in the minors last year while amassing a staggering 158 strikeouts in 134 innings. I already picked him up.

He has a fastball, curveball, slider, and just added a breaking ball which he considers one of his best pitches that no one has seen yet. For the upside i'm willing to drop a bench player.

Where is he in relation to Shelby Miller and Teheran?

I grabbed him in a mixed league but I'm keeping my expectations low.

Baseball America has him ranked as the #5 overall prospect. MLB has him ranked #7 prospect. At 20 years old he is light years ahead of where he should be. A master of four pitches he has A+ all over him.

Projected as a top ace. At this age who knows what will actually come of this guy. Why not take the chance though?!?!???

True number 1 start potential. He has a plus-plus fast ball (graded at 75 on the scouting scale by Baseball American) and a plus curve ball.

He is considered slightly better than Miller. He is considered a much much better prospect than Teheran.

He has no experience above A ball, so the results may not be there this year, but he has the potential to be an ace in the long run.

Are they doing a free preview of the Extra Innings package to start the year? I'd really like to watch his first start, but I'm guessing the Marlins aren't going to be nationally televised all that often...

wow took a shot on him in my keeper as a "stash", feeling like I just struck fantasy gold!!! :-D

but how's he play in re-drafts? I'm very tempted to add him across the board, based off talent alone... im just worried about how 'raw' he is, and obviously the fish wont be very good, maybe scrappy but not good.

He hasn't pitched above A-ball. I'd at least need to see what he can do in AA before getting excited and spending too much. Temper your expectations. Prospect lists are made with the long-term in mind more so than short-term.

With two minor league slots in my keeper league, I JUST drafted Fernandez with my final reserve pick, in anticipation of either Wil Myers or Zack Wheeler being promoted in the near future and would place Fernandez in the vacant ML slot. I'm pretty stoked about the news. ;-D

I wouldn't of done this if I were the Marlins. It starts his clock and just means they'll end up trading him earlier. Good player though.

I think pitchers have a better chance of succeeding early compared to hitters...really with these young guys it's all about command. His stuff is there but if he can't locate or just throw strikes then that is what will do him in. But having plus stuff gives him a real shot of having a solid season even so young without a lot of minor league innings...as long as he has command.

With that said, I agree with Havok, not a smart move.
