Players changing mechanics

Postby cordscords » Tue Mar 26, 2013 12:09 pm

Anybody have a list of hitters and pitchers that have changed their stance/swing or throwing motion this offseason? The only players I'm really aware of are Youk and Beckham.

Luke Hochevar is in the bullpen and the Royals have him pitching entirely out of the stretch in the spring. Presumably to get him better with runners on base, it probably won't translate to the regular season. Wait... what's that you say? Luke Hochevar is irrelevant? Sorry... that's what I get for following Rany Jazayerli on Twitter.

I came across an article mentioning that Dan Haren was trying a new grip on his splitter to get more movement. Maybe it's nothing and just usual spring tinkering that usually doesn't get reported.

Ricky Romero is starting his delivery closer to the third base side of the rubber so that his arm doesn't drag across his body when he pitches. I have very little faith that it will help. Also probably irrelevant, and it has not worked at all.

I'd also be really interested in hearing about other pitchers that have been tinkering with their mechanics. As you can see it's usually the guys that have bad years that start changing things, and that's almost always a bad sign. Like Tommy Hanson and Tim Lincecum from last season, for an established pitcher change = bad.

I'm not exactly sure what, but Dom Brown was shown "something" by a hitting coach and is raking

Yup. He's much quicker to the ball now instead of the big, looping swings he was taking when I saw him 2 years ago.

Trumbo shortened his swing some so maybe he will hit for higher average. Dunno if it will cost him power in the process though.
