Help with first two picks, WHIR

Postby wyld stallions » Sat Mar 23, 2013 4:20 pm

I am keeping Braun, Kemp and Votto (no penalty) I pick 7th

If any of the first 6 batters I listed are available I am grabbing them, if not I am thinking of grabbing a SP. I am high on Bumgarner. I may also target a SP on the way back but am not sure. I was going to take Hanley until his latest inj. I may target him with the 3rd pick if he is there.

available:
Batters:
Tulo
Bautista
Reyes
Beltre
Wright
Upton
Cespedes
Kinsler
Heyward
Encarnacion
A Jones
Bruce
Castro
Adrian Gonz
Zorbrist
Kipnis
Desmond
Hanley

SP:
Cliff Lee
Wainwright
Bumgarner
Dickey
Sales

12 team, h2h, 3 man keeper

We start all 9 positions plus one util. We have to pitch 39 innings per week

Scoring:
H, 2, 3, hr, R, RBi, BB, Ave. OBP, SB, SO, Fielding %
W, L, CG, SHO, SO, BB, ERA, WHIP, SV, BSV, Holds

I agree with the first 6 hitters thing, and given the dearth of pitching available taking Bumgarner might be wise since you like him so much. He certainly won't fall to your second pick. There's a ton of bats available, so going pitcher/batter might be a solid enough move if that's how it goes. If you get a batter first, though, you have to hope that at least Dickey or Sale makes it to you later. If they do, batter/pitcher is the way to go.

There are more than enough bats on that list I take a hitter with 1st pick almost for sure. Cliff Lee is worth considering (I have him ranged 9th among the available players....you wouldn't be crazy to snag him if he fell to you and none of the top 6 guys on my list are left)......but none of the other pitcher are worthy of a 1st round pick here....and I love Bumgarner.....just not that much)

Also, I'm not sure i agree with your rankings.....there are some risky guys on that list I think you have ranked a bit high.....and a couple of guys I think you have way too low.

here is how I rank the top 20 players (looks like you pick 7th and 18th?)

Tulo
Bats
Beltre
Upton
Reyes
Heyward
Encarnacion
Kinsler
Cl. Lee
A Jones
J Bruce
Ad. Gonzalez
S. Castro
Wright (downgraded due to back injury)
Y. Cespedes
Bumgarner
Wainwright
Zobrist
Sale
Dickey
Desmond
Kipnis

And I have Hanley ranked 25-30 spots behind Kipnis.

You have 3 great keepers.....and there is a ton of value left in this draft....including a ton of pitchers.

I certainly wouldn't panic and reach for pitching. I would have no problem going "best available" in 1st and 2nd rounds. If you end up with 2 bats, I wouldn't be worried about it. If you ended up with Cliff Lee and Bumgarner, that might make perfect sense depending on how the draft plays out. Just don't leave any value on the table in those 1st two rounds.

Then in the 3rd round you can start reaching to fill need in your lineup.

good luck.....help with mine?

My top 8 from that list. Wouldn't consider any of those pitchers over any of these guys.

Tulo
Bautista
Agonz
Beltre
