Yasiel Puig - ETA? Projections?

Postby KSChris » Fri Mar 22, 2013 9:30 am

I see this kid just raking this spring, and despite what every "expert" has said about him being raw, I can't imagine them keeping him down for long.

But what do you guys think his ETA is, and what kind of projections are we looking at once he comes up?

Where on the Trout - Harper - Cespedes meter would you rank him?

I picked him up for $2 in my keeper league, and am just curious what to expect. There doesn't seem to be a consensus, other than that he's good. But comparisons vary wildly from Bo Jackson to maybe as good as Cespedes.

Great job on getting him for $2. I don't think he'll be up this year, or if he is it will be late. I imagine he shows up next year full time since the Cubs will likely churn their outfield (out with the old, out with the underperforming new ...). The Cespedes projection sounds reasonable, though who really knows what happens when they get to the majors.

As soon as Carl Crawford goes down Puig will be called up and that will be the end of Crawford!

Oops! Thinking of Soler. Still think he's up next year since the Dodgers are fine in the outfield, unless Ethier gets traded.

This is my belief. Crawford is a bust both in terms of living up to that contract, and staying on the field at this point in his career.

I don't know who else the Dodgers have that could fill his spot if he goes down, but if Puig is mashing I dunno how long they can keep him down, especially since they paid all that money for him.

I think it's more likely that the Dodgers deal Ethier at some point this season. There were a lot of grumblings about that happening last year, so I wouldn't be surprised. I'm thinking he'll be up by June at the latest.

I could see the Dodgers flipping Ethier to a team like the Mutts that need an OF.

Let's put this in context; he's raking right now, but we're talking about less than 50 AB in Spring Training.

My opinion on him hasn't changed; he's a top 100 prospect, maybe top 50 depending on what you want to emphasize. He has loud tools but an unrefined swing. He doesn't use his lower half well. He has a Cespedes-like ceiling; big-time power and athleticism but might never make enough contact for it to matter.

It might sound like I'm down on him, but I'm not. He has superstar upside; I just want to point out that the reason he's a top 100 prospect and not a top 10 is that, unlike, say, Oscar Tavaras, he does NOT have a high floor to go along with his high ceiling. Puig carries considerable risk.

agreed - upside is as good as any top 10 prospect but floor is much, much lower
