Reason for Divisions

Is there any real reason to have divisions in a 12 team league?

I have a 12 team league with 2 divisions with 6 teams in each because we play a custom schedule. During our 21 week regular season each team plays 3 matches against each of the teams in its own division and 1 match against each of the teams in the other division. The winner of each division get the highest two seeds in the playoffs.

If you play a 22 week regular season with each team playing every other team twice there is no reason to have divisions

In theory, it could be fun... but the team/teams that get screwed will not be happy. (For example, when the team with a better record gets left out because they were in the tougher division)

As was said in the post above yours, if you have a custom schedule like was mentioned, no one gets screwed. You are playing your own division more times and a true champion emerges. It works the same way in MLB. It seems to work OK for them.
