How do you rank players?

How do you rank players?

Postby tc622 » Wed Mar 13, 2013 6:23 pm

I'm trying something new this year that I got out of the Fantasy Baseball Blackbook. It's called relative position value. It involves a players 3 yr fantasy points avg and the 3 yr fantasy points avg of all the (relevant) players at his position.

(Player avg-position avg)/position avg

Does anyone else use this or something similar? If so, how much weight should I give this number? If I get first pick, I'm guessing I should take Cabrera even if there is a 2B or catcher with a higher RPV. In other words, how much should I look at position scarcity?

Finally, what are your methods/processes for ranking players? It's a lengthy question I know... Any thoughts?

I should point out that all my leagues are points leagues

In h2h points I break each position down into tiers and list the players in each position side by side. The side by side tiers show me empty or weak tiers at any position. I draft the highest scoring player available who will fill an active roster position on my team unless there are only one or two players left in another position that is about to reach an empty tier. With this strategy I rarely miss being a playoff team unless the injury bug bites hard and long.

Thats sounds solid. Do you have a rule for when you draw the lines between tiers?

I play in custom points leagues so my tiers may be different than yours: I break the tiers in 50 point increments based upon projected stats for the season.
