Gordon Beckham. sleeper?

Postby SpecialFNK » Tue Mar 12, 2013 6:31 pm

could Gordon Beckham be a good sleeper?

his BABIP has fallen each of the last 3 years.
12- .254
11- .276
10- .297

his LD has been decent/good.
12- 19.5
11- 20.3
10- 17.4

his FB% has been good.
12- 42.3
11- 40.3
10- 37.0

his HR/FB has been fairly low considering his FB%.
12- 8.7
11- 6.4
10- 6.9

his K rate hasn't been that high.
12- 15.3
11- 19.9
10- 18.5

his BB rate hasn't been too bad.
12- 6.9
11- 6.3
10- 7.4

he has good contact?
12- 82.5
11- 79.1
10- 80.6

maybe he could return to the type of potential he showed in his rookie season?
he did have 16 HR last season. maybe he could push 20+?
he is likely to be batting low in the order, so R/RBI are going to be limited.
but based on where he is being drafted, he could be a steal.

The problem with Beckham is that he possesses no relevant fantasy skills. So even if things did click I don't see more than a .275-75-20-75-10 season. Worth a gamble late with 14+ teams but WW material for anything less.

according to the MDP from this thread.
viewtopic.php?t=454966
..Beckham's ADP is 280. that's undrafted in a standard 12 team league.
his high from there is 223. that's 19th round in a standard 12 team league.
I would love to have those numbers at 2B from those spots in the draft.

He made some progress last year but he swings at way too many balls outside of the strike zone and he isn't hitting for a lot of power. It's fine to take a flyer on him but I wouldn't want to be starting him.

I ended up with him on one team this year. I do think he offers good value that late. A solid MI option considering the price & upside.

If you look at those stats you'll see the BABIP trend has followed the FB% trend. He doesn't hit the ball all that hard and the more flyballs he hits the lower his BABIP is going to be and the lower his AVG is going to be. While the K% isn't too awful he pops out more than almost any player in baseball and those are just as bad as a strike out and they generally show poor contact. He is a poor base runner in general and gets caught almost as much as he steals so it is unlikely he surpasses 5 SB. He also isn't going to bat high in that lineup.

His top end upside line looks something like .250, 70 R, 20 HR, 65 RBI, 5 SB. His downside line is more like .230, 60 R, 12 HR, 55 RBI, 3 SB. He basically has no value unless you hear rumors about him completely changing his approach.

If youre counting on Beckham to be your starting 2B in a 12 team league you probably made a big mistake earlier in the draft.
