How late are you waiting to get a closer??

Postby mm92280 » Sun Mar 10, 2013 5:39 pm

We all know pitching is deep this year and, if you typically wait on anything, waiting to get a closer is a fairly typical strategy every year. Closers get injured, lose their jobs due to a sudden inability to throw strikes or keep the ball in the ballpark, etc and, thus, closers come out of the woodwork every year. I'm in a 20 teamer this year and, typically, I like to have 2 closers on my team to have a fighting chance. Now, that doesn't mean that I draft two sure-fire closers, as I might just draft one and roll the dice on a setup man or two and just pick up a 2nd closer from the FA pool during the year (pretty common for me).

So, how late are you guys waiting in drafts to get your first closer? I'm thinking in a league this size, that waiting until the 160-210 pick range still makes plenty of sense, as I should be able to get a Greg Holland or Jonathan Broxton there and either one is capable of being pretty solid. For me, this is one of the keys for my upcoming draft - when to pull the trigger and get my first closer. The second closer is somewhat optional for me, as it just depends on if I think a capable closer has fallen far enough for him to be considered a value pick (or if there is a sleeper offensive player or starter that I want, then I pass on 2nd closer).

In two 14 team leagues I got:
a.
Putz at 192
Balfour at 193
Parnell at 266
b.
Grilli at 192
Balfour at 201
Cishek at 220

In a 14 team keeper with 70 kept all over the board because of keeper round rules I got
Axford in the 11th
Betancourt in the 12th
Balfour in the 13th

Good luck ;-D

I usually grab a bunch of borderline closers with good stuff. At least a few always hit it big. If I grab a closer early-ish, it's a non-flashy guy with mediocre k-rate and a guaranteed job, because they're cheaper. And a month into the season when a couple big name guys go down with injuries I can trade away the so-so guys that are racking up easy saves for double their auction value. I usually have like 5 closers at some point in the season and swap them for offense upgrades.

11th or 12th round in a 14 team league and you'll be fine. I took Mariano as the 4th closer off the board in the 8th round of the Cafe Masters league this year, and am wishing I had waited at least two more rounds.

Here are the closers with rounds taken in this year's Cafe Masters League draft (which is still going on and currently in round 20 of 23).

Craig Kimbrel, ATL (4.10)

Jim Johnson, BAL (12.09)
Addison Reed, CWS (12.10)
Huston Street, SD (12.11)
Joel Hanrahan, BOS (12.12)
