Salvador Perez. And I refuse to justify it. I won't say he's a tremendous value, where he's going in drafts. (Catcher is deeper than usual.) Maybe I just like the thought of having a catcher that hits .300(ish). Whatever. Hands off.

(I'll also echo the Neil Walker love, and add the two young ss, Segura and Simmons.)

Why not? Considering where he gets picked, plus in avg, 15 hr, 10(again, ish) steals, good counting stats (hitting in the middle of the lineup) -- what's not to like? I am a little worried about the back injury, though.

that's below replacement value in a league that shallow

Ok I'll rephrase it to 'I don't understand why people like Neil Walker considering where he gets picked.' He hurts you in 4 categories, only BA does he bring positive value from a 12 team replacement level. In a 14 team league he's still the kind of play you only use when all other options have run out.

He's going 167 overall, ahead of value picks Torii Hunter, Homer Bailey, Ichiro Suzuki and ahead of these MI Aybar, Kendrick, Scutaro, Bonifacio, Hardy, Ackley, Cabrera and a guy I feel is going way too low Michael Young. All of these guys have limited value and you can wait until the tier is getting close to dry before giving in. Even later options like Simmons and Segura have upside value and Daniel Murphy should have similar stats for someone going 115 picks later.

Agreed. If he can slip far enough, I've love to grab him on the cheap. My question is how far is realistically far enough to consider V-Mart a steal?

Like I said in my Cardinals article, Wainwright is being drafted like a #2 when his peripherals held rock steady last year and his LOB% and BABIP greatly inflated his ERA. He's an ace you can get between pick 70-90.

High end it is Pedrioa and Fielder.

Mid range it is Gallardo, Castro and A. Cabrera (look at Gallardo's first game of the year and then rest of the year, you'll realize he is still mostly 2011 Gallardo as an example).

Lower range it is Utley, Hammel, Quentin, Viciedo

This is such a funny topic though. I read some of these lists and they are basically my all avoid list and I can't even understand why anyone would consider some of them good picks. I'm sure others read mine and think the same. Value is a pretty tricky subject.

I tend to like guys that have really solid floors that have a reason to expect improvements and guys who had breakouts fully supported by the skills but aren't getting drafted aggressively. I don't tend to target guys who need big breakouts to bring back value, I don't want guys coming back from injury that are going pretty high etc. I'll pass on someone like Halladay as an example but I love a guy like Utley who is coming into the year looking fully healthy and is still being picked around the chumps of the MI.

I'm the opposite, I like using my last few picks/dollars on high upside lottery tickets.
If your league isn't insanely deep there's always somebody you can replace them with if they bomb.
