Expected manager conduct
Be excellent to each other.
In the interest of making for an enjoyable experience for all, we do expect managers to play all season long. Lineups should be checked weekly so that you are starting active players. Managers that abandon their teams for significant portions of the season may not be asked back the following year.
The commissioner reserves the right to make unilateral, totalitarian decisions to promote (in his judgement) the betterment of the league.
In the event that you encounter a problem with another manager, please first try to work it out amongst yourselves. If this fails, contact the commissioner for mediation.
We are a 10-12 team league.
Unless we can ever find a date for a live draft, we will use an extended draft, starting middle of spring training.
2013 is a snake draft
Draft order for the 2014 year will be set based on team finishes from the prior year:
First picks in 2014 go to the #7 through #10 teams or #7 through #12 from 2013, in that order (based on winning percentage, with total points being the tiebreaker)
Pick #5 or #7 goes to the #6 team as determined by playoffs.
Pick #6 or #8 goes to the #5 team as determined by playoffs.
And so on, with the winning team this year picking last next year.
NO SNAKING IN 2014 DRAFT.
If the draft is not going to be completed by opening day, we will pick a day/time near the end of spring training and hold a "normal" draft for the remaining picks.
You may trade keepers or draft picks during the 2014 draft. Please do so and notify the commish with sufficient time in advance that the deal can be executed without delaying the draft. All draft pick trades must be reciprocal, however: all teams must end the draft with 22 picks. Furthermore, keepers are irrevocably bound to their assigned pick upon keeper submission, so trading a keeper = trading a draft pick.
The pool of available players for drafting is defined by Yahoo's database.
If the draft software is not permitting you to draft a player due to the software's roster requirements, the commissioner will work with you and the rest of the league to create a work around.
If a player that you do draft is unavailable in Yahoo, the commish will assign you a placeholder player. Rules:
You must keep the placeholder player on your roster. As soon as the drafted player appears in yahoo's database and we notice it, the drafted player MUST be swapped for the placeholder player. Waiver claims made on the player will be reversed, so please don't make them.
If you drop the placeholder player, you lose all rights to the player. You may not re-acquire him by picking up the placeholder player from waivers. Other managers may similarly not acquire the drafted player via the placeholder player. Once the placeholder player is dropped, we'll use normal Yahoo waiver and free agency rules on the drafted player. This is an intentional penalty for drafting players not in yahoo's database, and is meant as a mild deterrent and a way to get rid of placeholders.
Placeholder players (and rights to the drafted player) can be traded.
Please do not use the placeholder player in any active lineup slots.
The point system is designed to emulate a wRC*10 scale. The point system is described here.
This is a head-to-head points league. Each week, you match up against an opponent, and the team that accumulates the most points gets the win.
Wins, standings, and tiebreakers are entirely determined by Yahoo's software. The commissioner has no control over this.
Hitters: C, 1B, 2B, 3B, SS, CF, OF, OF, UT.
Pitchers: 5 SP, 3 RP, 1 P. The P slot gives you some flexibility while still requiring a balance of RP's and SP's. Note that because of the points given for saves and holds in the scoring system, top relievers can accumulate point totals that will be competitive with decentish starting pitchers.
We use two DL slots.
You can keep up to four players. Keeper picks are due ~one week prior to the start of our 2014 draft, submitted via an online form. Miss the deadline = no keepers.
Once a keeper is submitted, he is irrevocably bound to his specific pick in the draft.
In the first year that you keep a player (draft year + 1), he becomes your draft pick in the same round in which he was selected in the last draft (by you or whoever else). Guys who go undrafted become 22nd-round players. Keeper draft round status does not change when a player is traded, released, or signed as a free agent or waiver pickup.
In subsequent years that a player is kept (draft year + 2 or more), his "draft round" will advance as the prior year's round divided by two (round up). An 8th-round pick becomes a 4th-round pick. An 11th round pick becomes a 6th-round pick. A 3rd-round pick becomes a 2nd-round pick.
You cannot keep more than one player from the same round (i.e. you can't keep two first-rounders). However, if you wish, you may "bump" up a player's round. So, if you wish to keep two fourth-round players, Jimmy and Jimbo, you'd need to notify the commish that you are converting Jimbo into a third-round player. This decision causes a permanent alteration of the player's draft round status! Jimbo can never again be a fourth-round player. You cannot keep two first-round players.
If you have traded away a pick, you cannot keep a player at that pick. You will have to "bump" him (see above) to an earlier round.
A player's "keeper round" resets when they re-enter the draft pool.
Example 1: I signed Trevor Bauer in 2013 as a free agent and traded him to another manger in 2013. He was not drafted in 2013. If kept indefinitely, Bauer would be:
* a round-22 selection in the 2014 draft
* a round-11 selection in the 2015 draft
* a round-6 selection in 2016
* a round-3 selection in 2017
* a round-2 selection in 2018
* a round-1 selection in 2019 and from that point on.
Example 2: I signed Todd Frazier as a free agent in 2013, but he had previously been drafted in the 8th round and then released. Here are his keeper costs, assuming he is always kept:
2014: 8th round
2015: 4th round
2016: 2nd round
2017+: 1st round
You set your lineups weekly, with the deadline Sunday night/Monday morning for Monday's games. Any changes to the lineup after the deadline will not appear until the next week's lineup. Weekly lineups prevent a lot of practices that I find exploitative, like extreme streaming of starting pitchers or position players on off days. It also prevents the need to have IP or PA caps, which I think are dreadfully un-fun, and reduces manager time requirements for success in the league.
Free agent, waiver, and trade transactions are final when you hit "submit." Late-hour injuries are insufficient grounds to have a transaction reversed. Your one-year old dropping your favorite player while playing with your iphone may grounds for reversal (this has happened), but will require commissioner approval.
Players are placed on waivers for 2 days after being dropped from a team or added to the league.
If more than one manager claims a player on waivers, the player will go to the manager with the highest waiver priority (initially determined by draft order).
Once you use a waiver claim, your waiver priority drops to #10 or #12. It will rise as other managers use their claims and thus drop below you on the list.
