First and foremost, thanks for any and all advice. I genuinely appreciate it.
We keep 6 in my league, my top 5 are pretty much untouchable.
CarGo Prince Verlander Bautista Heyward
I just need help deciding on my 6th. Spent most of last season in 1st place and would like to continue the trend. These are in my opinion the top options for my 6th.
Encarnacion Darvish G. Gonzalez Medlen Gallardo Kimbrel Trumbo Bourn I. Desmond
Encarnacion would be the best available player if I dont keep him, Darvish best available pitcher. Thoughts? Thanks again.
That is tough, I feel it'd be between Encarnacion and Gio... the only reason I could go with Gio would be because you only have one starter to keep and he would help your balance... BUT this being said, if you drafted Encarnacion there would be a glut of your former pitchers available (plus the others left out by other teams) left to draft early in the first few rounds... so I'd go with E5
My main concern is Im noticing a few of the managers in my league plan to keep 2 pitchers. I pick 7th so its likely only 1 of those even makes it back to me in the 1st. 5 SP slots on our rosters. I have flexiblility with E5 because I already have a first baseman in Prince who I acquired this offseason in a trade. However, having the current 3/4 in Toronto wasnt a horrible thing last year and likely wont be this year. We have a CI spot as well as a Util so plugging him in isnt an issue. Plus I drafted E5 in the 24th round and I loved giving everyone hell about it last year. We just fell a bit short in the playoffs.
I say take the decision out of your hands and trade both for either an upgrade at hitting or pitching (I think you'll have the choice if you dangle those guys in a pair).
If you were really thinking of keeping Gio and dropping E5, then trade him AND E5 for Strasburg (I have to think a reasonable owner would think E5 is a reasonable bridge between the two pitchers' values). Or upgrade at hitter. Just need one owner who is a little lite on his keepers or doesn't like his mix of hitters/pitchers. Also, I'd consider Darvish as a trade piece, either with Gio or E5.
Would you be overpaying if you did that? Probably, but a slightly lopsided trade when the alternative is to flat out drop one of the players is a pretty good choice to me.
If you got Fielder via trade, I think you can make this work.
Encarnacion is the best name on the list.........and the next best players are 5 pitchers (Darvish Gonzalez, Gallard, Medlen and Kimbrel).....and Encarnacion is significantly better than the other hitters on the list (Bourn, Trumbo and Desmond)
Rule #1: When in doubt, always, always, go with hitting over pitching......especially when the hitter is clearly better than the pitcher(s).
Rule #2: Never keep a closer (unless you are in a super-deep league or you are keeping 10+ players)
All of this is a very long way of saying:
Keep Encarnacion and don't even think twice about it!
