Its progress for me, I've got Fujikawa. In the eighth inning, in a 1-0 game at that point, he used 9 pitches, 2 ground outs and a K. :-)

I guess it is progress he only walked one but we aren't even through the first week and I'm nearing the end of my rope with Marmol. I knew he was bad and I only ended up with him in my NL only cause he scared off everyone else but I think Fujikawa will be in my lineup instead of him next week. I imagine the Cubs follow suit sooner than later.

Valverde will do some throwing at the Tigers spring training complex before joining AAA Toledo, which is also where Bruce Rondon is.
so who would be closing for Toledo, Valverde or Rondon?
when Rondon was sent down before the season I thought the plan was to have him close in AAA to see how he does, and that he would/could be coming up to the Tigers before too long. be interesting to see which of them is closing. if Rondon is pitching the 9th with Valverde pitching the 8th, if they are both pitching well, who gets the call? I would have to assume based on experience it would be Valverde. even if Rondon would be pitching well, would they really want to hand him the closers job when he's never pitched yet in the majors?

Valverde will be the closer. Might take a month though. No way they sign him without the intent that he becomes the closer.

It's a minor league deal. No commitment. If he still stinks (and I think most people fully expect this to be the case) he'll simply either stay in the minors all year or opt out of his contract and become a FA again.

He is free to go if he isn't in the major leagues by May 1.

i know what it is. Intent from the Tigers is pretty clear though. It has to be a minor league deal simply because hes had no spring training. No way Tigers do this if they do not intend for him to be closer, especially right after having closer troubles. Anything can happen though,,,maybe he doesnt get back into pitching shape or gets injured or who whatever. If he gets into shape,,he'l be closing. Even with late in the season troubles,,he has had too many saves over the last couple years to ignore.

Better chance that Valverde or Frank Francisco take over the closer job at some point?

If Valverde performs reasonably well, he gets the job, IMO. If Francisco performs reasonably well, he will need to better Parnell so you have two variables going with him. I like Valverde's chances better if both are decent but not great (which is what I think is probably their "good" case scenario).
