The only reason Veras has the job is because the team stinks. Even if he holds it I doubt he is really worth owning.

As for Kintzler in Milwaukee... have you seen him pitch? He won't be the closer long if they give him the job, he can't throw his fastball for strikes and relies completely on a sinker/slider combo now and it isn't terribly effective. It won't surprise me if Valverde is closing in Milwaukee by May.

Nope. I know squat about him. I'm wondering more about Henderson being a stop-gap closer for the Brewers short-term. Axford looks horrible.

First post of the year and I just wanted to thank everyone in advance for all the valuable info in this thread, I really believe it is the best source of closing info on the internet. Last year didn't draft a closer and won saves easily with the help of this thread.

I'm trying to rank my assortment of non-closers in terms of value going forward and this is how I see them...but it's murky and some insight would be appreciated. Do I have Ryan Cook valued way to high?

Gregerson
Ryan Cook
Hernandez
Henderson
D. Robertson (lots of K's even if no save Opps)

Adam McCalvy (MLBlogs Network) on the closer sitch in Milwaukee:
"If you remove Axford, you have to have a better option. Jim Henderson is the Brewers' Plan B, but he had an uneven spring and is still proving himself as a Major League pitcher. Michael Gonzalez has closed games before, but he is still gaining Roenicke's confidence. Alfredo Figaro is hot right now, but he's a starting pitcher just adjusting to the bullpen."

Rotoworld added:
"If Axford's struggles continue, Henderson should get the next crack at the ninth-inning gig. The Canadian right-hander is stash-worthy in mixed leagues."

Henderson heating up in Yahoo adds: 7,685 today, 2,826 yesterday. Still only 9% owned in Yahoo, though. :-B

Looks like Detroit has signed Valverde to a minor league deal. FWIW

Tigers sign Jose Valverde to minor league deal. Odds he ends up closing games at some point?

I guess I shouldn't be surprised, but given the clear "No" the Tigers gave when asked about Valverde umpteen times, I really am stunned.

What a mess.... Added dotel, have a waiver claim on benoit (who someone just dropped.) Now valverde --- anyone like him better then the rest to wind up in the ninth? Guessing he doesn't last long with several tiger fans in my league.

Amazing thread by the way -- thanks to all the contributors.

Assuming Valverde does well in Toledo, I'm sure the Tigers brass will give him a legitimate shot. Anyone's guess if he's got enough left in the tank as his numbers dipped significantly last season.
