You guys are completely ridiculous.

One of the all-time great closers has a 2.08 ERA, 1.18 WHIP and 35 saves.

He blows two saves, one of which was because he gave up 2 hits (1 ER) over 2 innings, and you guys are calling for the handcuff.

If you're serious, you really need something better to do with your time than micro-managing and over-thinking situations like this. Come down off the ledge, he'll be fine.

Agreed. Heck, Mariano can still pitch. He just wants to retire. Like how Pettitte retired just to come back. He is the Closer King for god sakes. What's wrong with you people?!

I mean, if you have room or a scrub, then by all means grab Robertson. If there are no other closers on the Free Agent list, and you need one, go for broke. Maybe you'll get 1-2 saves. If you have to drop someone of note... then hell no.

Situation on Betancourt anyone?
He is about due to return. Will he?

If so, I drop Brothers now in another of my leagues. Well, after tonights game that is. No sense in missing out on a potential save.... Plus by the time he clears waivers, he would be useless. This one is an active league so he will be grabbed if useful.

CBS reported yesterday that Betancourt doesn't know if he will return to the closer role (they included quotes from him). I'm not sure there is clear direction on this one.

Johnson is single-handedly knocking the Orioles out of the playoffs. There's no way the can keep throwing him out there with Rodriguez there.

So, the big question is, who do they put in the 9th if not Johnson? @closernews seems to think it'll be K-Rod. ESPN's closer chart says Tommy Hunter will be likely to take over. Roto Authority's chart agrees with @closernews that it'll be K-Rod, but hasn't been updated for almost a week. I went one step further than all of these and wrote down all of the Orioles' save/hold situations since the All-Star Break in reverse chronological order (with the most recent save/hold situations first) and also with the closer on top, the 8th inning guy(s) next, etc. on down to every person who received a hold. I was both curious, and it was worth it to me as I'm in a holds league:

Johnson - B(lown save)
K-Rod - H(old)
O'Day - H
Matusz - H

Johnson - B
K-Rod - H

Hunter - B(lown hold)
Matusz - H

Hunter - H

Hunter - S(ave)
Johnson - B/W(in)

Johnson - S
O'Day - H
Matusz - H
Hunter - H

Johnson - S
K-Rod (no hold)
Patton - H

Johnson - S
Matusz - H
Hunter - H

Johnson - S
O'Day - H

O'Day - S
Matusz - H

Johnson - S
Hunter (no hold)

Johnson - S
O'Day - H

So, to tally it all up, Johnson appeared 9 times, 8 times as the final RP, once as the 2nd-to-last RP when he blew a save but got a win. This makes sense because he's been the closer. K-Rod appeared 3 times, all as the 2nd-to-last RP and, most recently, as the setup man to Johnson in their past 2 appearances. O'Day appeared 5 times, with 4 holds (3 in the 8th inning role, once in the 7th inning or 3rd-to-last RP role) and 1 save a while ago. Matusz appeared 5 times, all holds, 3 times as the 2nd-to-last RP, once as the 3rd-to-last guy, and once as the 4th-to-last guy. Hunter appeared 6 times, with 1 blown hold, 3 holds (in the 2nd-, 3rd-, and 4th-to-last spots once each), 1 save, and 1 non-hold situation right before a save. Patton appeared once in a random hold situation; he's probably not worth discussing here.

So, in essence, trying to pick the next O's closer will be kind of a crapshoot because Showalter loves to mix it up. I agree with @closernews/Roto Authority that K-Rod has the fast track since he's been used most recently as the penultimate RP. O'Day appears to be used sometimes as the 8th inning guy. Matusz is a lefty specialist it seems, so his role is variable and he probably won't get the closer job immediately. Hunter has been all over the place and it's really impossible to tell where he'll be if Johnson loses the closer role; he could get it, or he could pitch in the 6th inning in a hold situation. I'm guessing he has a good shot to get it since Showalter used him last in a save situation when Johnson had already pitched. If I had to rank Johnson's successors in terms of most-likely-to-get-the-closer-job, I'd go:

K-Rod
Hunter
O'Day
Matusz

If johnson blows another save, you can bet K-Rod is up. At least for 1 or 2 tries. Unless he blows his first chance. Then depending on the standings they may let JJ test the waters again. If he blows it yet again, or has a scary outing, he is gone. Bet on it.

On the 11th, Flores decided to hit a HR on the top of the 9th. So Hawkins outing a non-save.
On the 14th Hawkins blew a save.
Son on the 15th, people wondered when German got the save opp over Hawkins.
Edit: He took one to the nads (ouch). Ergo the day off.
But on Friday the 16th, it was back to Hawkins for the save so it seems it's Hawkins until Parnell returns.

As for the Colorado situation: Folks here are saying Betancourt said he doesn't know if he's returning as closer. I got this off sportsline.com (right off the player notes) so IDK.

"Rafael Betancourt expected to resume closer role
by Igor Mello | CBSSports.com

Rockies reliever Rafael Betancourt is expected to resume his role as the team's closer once he
is activated from the disabled list on Saturday, according to the Denver Post."
