Gardner's career numbers suggest that hoping for anything beyond a .270 AVG is probably too optimistic. Ichiro hit .322 with the Yanks last year, and is a much safer bet to bat .285 or better IMO, so I feel pretty safe slotting Ichiro a fair ways above Gardner on the AVG side. Gardner will almost assuredly get more steals though, regardless of where he bats in the order.
I have Ichiro pegged to bat second mind you, and if he ends up lower in the order the rest of his counting stats (the ones that push his value up a little above Gardner's) will suffer.
