Hey there. I'm the returning champion in an eight-team H2H keeper league with a 25 man roster. Last year's roster:
C: A.J. Pierzynski (UD) 1B: Miguel Cabrera (1st) 2B: Robinson Cano (2nd) 3B: Ryan Zimmerman (5th) SS: Elvis Andrus (7th) OF: Giancarlo Stanton (4th) OF: Mike Trout (UD) OF: Jay Bruce (9th) UTIL: Yoenis Cespedes (UD) UTIL: Austin Jackson (UD) SP: Clayton Kershaw (2nd) SP: Gio Gonzalez (14th) SP: Hiroki Kuroda (22nd) SP: Kris Medlen (UD) RP: Jonathan Papelbon (8th) RP: Rafael Soriano (UD) RP: Rafael Betancourt (14th) P: Wade Miley (UD) P: Ryan Vogelsong (UD) P: Vinnie Pestano (UD) Bench: Alex Rodriguez (6th), Brandon Morrow (15th), Ivan Nova (UD), Jesus Montero (18th), David Robertson (20th)
I get three keepers, losing the draft pick in the round where the player was drafted in 2012. The bolded players (Trout and Miggy) are my first two. Miggy takes my 1st round pick and Trout takes my last round pick for going undrafted. Who do I keep as my pitcher? In this league, most people are keeping their first round picks from the previous year, so with my position at the end of the 1st round/beginning of the second, I'm in a good spot to grab Kershaw or someone of equal value. I had planned to keep Gio, a 14th round selection last year, but I'm concerned about MLB disciplinary action. Do I keep Gio, or do I go with an undrafted guy like Miley or Medlen?
I'm not too worried about disciplinary action with Gio, but I have him and Medlen very closely ranked anyways so I'd go with Medlen as an undrafted player.
I'm initially drawn to Medlen too. I assume you couldn't have drafted him any higher than the last round (if at all) and I think he's a great fit if you're looking to keep a SP. Although if you're expecting to get Kershaw with your 1st/2nd round pick, I might just keep him and be safe in case something would go awry and he gets snatched up by someone who throws you a curve with their keepers
I don't have to keep a pitcher. It's something I'd like, though. I'd lose a 4th round pick for Stanton, which isn't bad at all. 3 of the owners in my league are of the "overvalue pitchers" variety, which concerns me a bit. So it's looking like my best options are Medlen, Gonzalez, Stanton, and Kershaw. I was definitely leaning towards Medlen based on draft pick value.
I'm sure others will disagree, but I don't think there is much value in Stanton in the 4th round of an 8 team league. I assumed you had to keep a pitcher, but I wouldn't have a problem with keeping Medlen still.

I think you definitely have to consider keeping him as well.
I wouldn't worry about any of your pitchers even Kershaw as there will be many options in an 8 team league.
No, this was my thought too, except with it snaking, he gets the top pick of the 2nd round which could conceivably be the #1 pick in the draft, where he could take Cano back himself.
To me, it's the undrafted Yeonis Cespedes. 8 team league there's no need to go crazy on pitching, and he has the potential to be a top OF. To keep him with the last round or 2nd to last round since you already have Trout, that seems like a no brainer to me. Then you can take Cano or another player close to Cano in the 2nd which is more like the first here and you're ready to go.
