Hi all, I can't wait for the season to start. In the meantime I'm preparing for my draft and deciding on my keepers. We can keep 4 in total. Our keeper's auction salaries count against our available draft money, and after 3 seasons their salaries start going up $5/year. So, Giancarlo will be going up to $6, for example. Free agent salaries are $1.
I think I'm going to keep these 4: Giancarlo Stanton ($6), Chris Sale ($1), Manny Machado ($1), and Jacoby Ellsbury ($23). What do you think?
Would you rather hold on to Hanley, even though he's going up to $26? I was considering keeping him over Ellsbury. Or is there anyone else that you would rather keep? We do have the option of making offseason trades but I haven't come up with any potential deals. I know Machado may have growing pains but I know he'd go for a lot more than $1 in my league and pairing him up with Sale and Stanton for the long term would be great.
Here's my current roster from last season, with 2013 salaries:
12-team, 5 x 5 roto league with auction draft and 4 keepers
C- Alex Avila (1) C- AJ Ellis (1) 1B- Freddie Freeman (19) 2B- Omar Infante (1) 3B- Hanley Ramirez (26) SS- Manny Machado (1) MI- Josh Rutledge (1) CI- Aramis Ramirez (17) OF- Giancarlo Stanton (6) OF- Jacoby Ellsbury (23) OF- Alfonso Soriano (1) OF- Carl Crawford (16) OF- Alejandro De Aza (1) DH- Allen Craig (1) BN- Kevin Youkilis (20), Carlos Lee (1), Yonder Alonso (1), Eric Young Jr. (1), Dee Gordon (15)
P- Yovani Gallardo (29) P- Ryan Vogelsong (1) P- Chris Sale (1) P- Joel Hanrahan (1) P- Mike Fiers (1) P- JJ Putz (16) P- Carlos Marmol (1) P- Wandy Rodriguez (5) P- Jaime Garcia (1) P- Brett Anderson (1) P- Dallas Braden (1)
NOTE: One other change for this season: we are replacing the Saves category with Solds (Saves + Holds). I don't think that has any bearing on my keepers though, as I wasn't planning on keeping any relievers anyway.
Thanks and if you post a link I'll help on yours!

I think you are clearly right on with Stanton and Sale. Machado is solid as well and I have no problem with you keeping him there, but with your other two picks I would also consider guys like Alex Avila, Brett Anderson (health risk of course but at $1 it might be mitigated) and to a lesser extent Vogelsong or Garcia just based on the value..you have a lot of great $1 options!
I love Ells and at $23 I think that is solid but given his injuries you might buy him back for not less than $30 anyway which might be offset by all your $1 values. Just food for thought.
I am also questioning Ellsbury in my keepers at a similar price point and might be leaning against him for value reasons.

Agreed. The others I am good with. Not sold that Machado turns into much this year but It think he is too good of a price to give him up. Guys like Hanley and Ellsbury aren't much cheaper than what they will go at auction and they come with too much injury concerns. I would rather have as much money as I can have at auction then tie it up with a couple guys that might not play 150 games for you.

Stanton 'Craig Machado Sale Wish you could keep 5 (a one buck Machado is a steal too he's a great talent who is capable of vaulting into the early rounds next year with a big year and he's capable of it. HE can hit for average, has some power some speed and plays a thinner position what's not to like?)
The best there is, the best there was, and the best there ever will be!

Just for my knowledge to all the other posters, why would you not keep Ramirez?
Stanton 6 Craig 1 Sale 1 Machado 1
There is no one of these to drop for Hanley 26
I agree with Hootie on this one, those are the four you should keep. Heck I'd keep Rutledge and Anderson at a dollar before I would keep Ellsbury or Hanley. If you want Ellsbury or Hanley, then pay for them in the draft...I can't see them going for that much more. With the four above, you will have a solid set of keepers and a lot of money to spend.
How much do you guys think Machado will go for on draft day.
Personally I think Hanley goes in the 30's and he is the best SS option in the league, assuming he still qualifies there.
If machado goes for 8-10 its about the same difference but you get a proven player in Hanley.
Sorry, I am not trying to hijack this thread, just trying to learn the rationale here. Seems like Hanram is a great price at 26. At least for this year.
I agree with the other 3 but I would definitely keep Ramirez over machado in this spot.
Edit - actually I see now, if he can keep Machado for the next three years without the price going up and Hanley will go up five dollars a year, then it wouldnt make sense to keep Hanley. I got it now.
Yes, I agree - Sale, Craig, Machado and Stanton
