A's trade for Lowrie

Postby Ender » Mon Feb 04, 2013 11:29 pm

I bring this up because it has some pretty major fantasy impact.

A's get Lowrie and an unimportant MR.
Astros get Peacock and Chris Carter and a prospect that probably doesn't matter for 2013.

Carter suddenly looks like a full time player. Peacock has a much easier path to a rotation spot. Lowrie is going to be a utility guy most likely and could end the season with 3B and 2B eligibility to go along with SS and might see some time at DH which would hopefully help keep him healthier. I'd say those marginal 2B guys for the A's take a hit in value. I'd have to assume this means Moss is a viable late round 1B for the A's as well now.

I'm actually going to bump up Carter quite a few positions. Probably Carter will be primarily used as DH in a great hitter's park.

It makes me sad that the A's finally gave up on Carter, but this is a good trade fantasy-wise for both Carter and Peacock.
Not much blocking them in Houston.

Apparently the A's still plan on using Nakajima as the SS and Lowrie as a utility infielder. This trade has got to hurt his value.

There goes one of my late round sleepers moving to Oakland has to hurt any power surge I was hoping to find and no telling how many at bats he gets now :-[

This was a good move by the A's who really needed help in the infield.

Between 3B,SS, 2B and the occasional start at 1B against a tough lefty, I'd be very surprised if Lowrie didn't get 500+ ABs during the season (barring injury).

I think it helps his value. He was never going to stay healthy playing full time and the Astros lineup is bad enough it kills everyones value from a R/RBI standpoint. If he hits well I could see him play full time at 2B since the other options are all really mediocre. He'll find his ABs in that lineup. The A's are deep but they are deep with mediocrity in the IF.

Astros got more for Lowrie than Sox did

Astros have basically no choice but to play Carter full time and hope for the best, which could be great for his development (I know the Astros literally have other options, but you know what I mean)

Hasn't Beane wanted Lowrie for the longest? As a few others have mentioned, he should get enough run to perhaps hold decent value.

there is so many fantasy changes that could happen because of this.

where does Lowrie play? 2B? 3B? newly signed Hiroyuki Nakajima is at SS.
Lowrie is risky to me. can't stay healthy. his most games played was last year with 97 games and 340 AB.
Josh Donaldson is at 3B?
can Scott Sizemore still be an option to take over at 3B?
looks like Jemile Weeks wont be a regular, unless he's traded.
is Brandon Moss full time at 1B, and not being platooned to sit against LHP? if Moss can play full time I think his value goes up.

who loses playing time in Houston?
is Brett Wallace at 1B? or 3B?
if Wallace is at 3B, what about Matt Dominguez?
is Chris Carter the 1B? or DH? if Carter can play full time I think his value goes up.
if Carter is the DH? what about newly signed Carlos Pena?
who plays SS? Tyler Greene? he could have value now.

I think Lowrie is overrated. for one he can't stay healthy. plus for each of the last 2 years he has done most of his damage early in the season.
