I'm in a Y! 10-team 5x5 mixed keeper league (standard scoring). We can keep 5 players each year, and players can be kept for 5 consecutive years before they have to go back to the draft. My keepers are currently:
Cargo (2 years left: 2013, 2014) Stanton (3 years left: 2013 - 2015) Strasburg (4 years left: 2013 - 2016) Hamels (3 years left: 2013 - 2015) Tulowitzki (1 year left: 2013)
I was just offered Hanley (4 years left: 2013 - 2016) and McCutchen (2 years left: 2013, 2014) for my Cargo and Strasburg. I've gone back and forth on this, but am currently leaning against it. Your thoughts?
Leave a link and I'll reply. Thanks!
My thoughts: Reasons I'm against: I like McCutch slightly more than Cargo, but I like Strasburg way more than Hanley - particularly over the full 4 year period. I want to be optimistic about Hanley, but the last few years have me spooked. He still tends to be fairly highly rated - and multi-position eligibility (at least for 2013) with 20/20 potential is nice, but I think Strasburg can have 2-4 years of vintage Pedro or Johan Santana type numbers.
Reasons I haven't rejected the trade yet: 1) I personally think McCutch has more upside over the next two years than Cargo; 2) Concern about arm troubles with Strasburg (nothing specifically tied to Stras...just the increased injury risk for all SPs). 3) Scarcity of SS/3B vs. SP.
I'd pass and keep Strasburg. If he stays healthy he's a star and will only improve his wins, k's, etc. with more innings pitched. Hanley has risk too- he's ok but not the star he was in the past imo.
Cargo and McCutch basically wipe themselves out, so to me the trade boils down to Hanley for Strasburg. I am just not buying into a Hanley resurgence enough to pass on Strasburg, who could be the best pitcher in baseball over the next 2-3 years. Also as you mentioned since this would be a long term deal and you don't know how Hanleys position eligibility will play out so its very hard to factor in position scarcity into this trade at all.
He is offering you a legit deal, and if all things equal...the years of control for the second best pitcher in the game, I'd just have to pass on this.
The best there is, the best there was, and the best there ever will be!
Even though I would gain an extra keeper year by trading Hamels for Hanley, I'm still not sure I come out ahead (SP's tend to go higher in this league than general leagues). So...two questions:
1) Should I counter with my Cargo + Hamels for his McCutch + Hanley?
2) If he rejects that, is Hamels for Hanley worth doing, or do I just keep my roster as is for now?
I'd do either option but far prefer option 1. Infact before going the straight 1-1 Hamels Hanley route I'd look into several 2-2, 3-3 type scenarios to also net you Cutch. Tulo's final year would be in play for me for instance.
