Mauer, Headley and Braun Keepers

Postby spendo02 » Mon Jan 21, 2013 9:14 pm

Head to Head, Points based 10 team league.

Our league offers keepers that can be kept in specific rounds only (based on half of the round they were drafted in last year).

Braun is a 1st Rounder, which is pretty obvious for keeping.

I can also keep Headley in the 11th and Mauer in the 5th. Headley finished 4th in total points at his position last year; Cabrera, Beltre and Aramis finished ahead of him. I think he's a pretty solid value pick at 11th. Thoughts?

Mauer is eligible for 1B and C this year. He finished 3rd in total points at Catcher last year; Posey and Molina finished ahead of him. I think taking Mauer in the 5th is a bit dangerous, but a pretty solid value play having the ability to draft in rounds 2, 3 and 4. Thoughts?

From a points perspective, we get various positives for all forms of hits, walks, runs scored, rbi and stolen bases. We get negatives for AB's, K's and CS.

What is the question? do you have other options other than Mauer? I'm from MN and I do not love Mauer in the 5th as a keeper, if you have other value elsewhere, I would possible take them.

Ichiro, OF in the 4th
Brantley, OF in the 12th
Buchholz, SP in the 9th
Josh Johnson, SP in the 5th

I have CarGo, Lee, Sabathia any of which can all go in the 2nd as keepers, but with a 4th pick overall and the expectation every owner will most probably use a 1st round pick on a keeper, I feel I can get equivalent value in my second pick. Hence, the desire to use keepers in "value" picks instead of throwing away a keeper slot in the second round to get equivalent value and not upgrade my depth.

There's a distinct possibility that Joey Bats, David Price, Jered Weaver, James Shields, King Felix, Aramis, Pedroia, amongst others may be available in the 2nd round due to the expansive amount of value picks out there for teams. Granted it could backfire and owners elect to just keep their 3 best players and give up their first 3 picks, but even so I'd expect to at a minimum have my 3 options for a second round pick available if that happens.

In effect:
With 3b, C and OF covered I could draft in R2, R3 and R4 potential 1B's like Votto or Adrian Gonzalez; potential OF of CarGo, Rios or Hamilton; a multitude of top flight SP's like Felix, Weaver, Shields, Lee, amongst others.

We do have Corner and Middle Inf slots as well as 3 Utility so having redundancy in positions is not a bad thing.

I would still be keeping Cargo. Of those guys you listed that might be available in the 2nd round, only Votto would I take over Cargo. Not sure I would risk it.

As for keepers, I probably would let Mauer go. He is an ok pick but I think you should be able to get him back if you wanted or take something better here. I am not a big fan of keeping catchers anyway plus add Mauers spotty history over the past few years and I think I would try and get something else.

Cargo/Braun/Headley ;-D
Can you keep 2 2nd round picks?
if so I'd consider Sabathia I guess but would probably throw him back anyway.
Pass on Mauer.
