should you ever keep a pitcher?

Postby jmolnar1 » Sat Jan 19, 2013 8:57 am

I get to keep 3 in a 10 man h2h league. We have 2 new ppl joining, so they will grab the top 6 available players off the board before i even get a chance to draft

Hitting categories: R,HR,RBI,SB,K,FPCT,AVG,OBP,SLG

Pitching categories: W,SV,K,ERA

Verlander,
Pujols,
Ian Kinsler,
Hanley Ramirez,
Ian Desmond,
Carlos Gonzalez,
Giancarlo Stanton

I am thinking Pujols and leaning towards CarGo and Hanley because of the position eligibility. Shortstop is so thin. I am a tigers fan and I'm torn about keeping a pitcher when hitters account for more points and you only typically use a pitcher once every 5 days, but is Verlander worth keeping? Please help!

Given 9 offensive categories vs 4 pitching, I'd say you're picking the right 3. If it were a 5x5, I may have said Pujols, Ramirez, and Verlander. But not knowing the people in your league or how the twists of the draft usually go, it's hard to say for sure.

In a league like that I wouldnt even consider keeping a pitcher, especially with Cargo, Stanton and Pujols. Toss Hanley back IMO.

Since there are so few pitching CATs and only 4 P positions, I think a top tier SP will almost assure you good SP numbers.

Cargo and Pujols are definite keepers. Han-Ram is definitely out (he's could be terrific and a top-10 guy, but there's just enough doubt and more importantly, you have other options which are more of a safer bet for a keeper).

The best way to frame the answer is:
A. If you kept a hitter as your third keeper, what is the likelihood that you get a pitcher in your first round that is close to Verlander.
B. If you kept Verlander, what is the likelihood that you could get a hitter close to Stanton in your first round (Stanton would be my third keeper, great power, nice avg, great OBP).

I think most people will think like the rest of us and keep mostly hitters, which means the likelihood of finding a great pitcher in the draft is higher than average.

Keep three hitters and grab a Cain/Hamels/maybe Verlander with your first draft pick. I know Stanton has some injury concern, but I just think you'll get your numbers with him.

Good luck.
