Yes its true that its the clientele with Yahoo. They do have a pay league though. I think its $15 or something so that could mitigate the issue.
Things are a bit better when Ive done private leagues in Yahoo, but inactivity still happens. Usually an owner will get disillusioned when their team gets too far behind, they have a slew of injuries, or they can't pull of a trade.
It is still the people though and not the service though.
If the only consideration is the service, then its Yahoo hands down.
I simply don't understand why anyone would ever choose yahoo over espn. I play espn in my long time league and yahoo in a couple cafe leagues. Yahoo is tedious. Comparisons of players for trades and FAs are much more efficient on espn. Just my .02, anyways.

It's all preference. I have most of my leagues on Yahoo, but I had to play on ESPN for the industry league hosted by the FSWA, and I hated everything about it.
ESPN Blows, Fantrax has alot of options, but fails to deliver a solid interface.
Nothing really touches the cleanliness of yahoo, but CBS honestly has the best combination of features and interface for my league, which is an auction keeper league. If I could take all my features with me, I'd go Yahoo. (Honestly at this point, it's just the draft room that kills it for yahoo).

Never seen the point in paying $200 for CBS, yes it's nice but once they went from $49 to $200, it was no longer worth it.
They are $89.99 for the first year with coupon and $149.99 for every year after that with coupon.
i hate espn also. No more leagues for me there. Even with the hiccups last year, ill still go yahoo over cbs. Yahoo is just easy and the interface makes sense, i like the draft room the best also.
