Fixing how the Hall of Fame voting works

Postby neoforce » Mon Jan 07, 2013 11:58 am

If you are frustrated with the way Hall of Fame voting works, you should sign the petition at https://www.change.org/petitions/change ... ng-process There is a great supporting article by Dave Studeman of HBT at http://www.hardballtimes.com/main/artic ... et-button/

I'm certainly not optimistic that either the HOF or BWAA are open to any change. But if a petition went viral it might provide some pressure on them. At least in my dreams.
There are a few things with the New York Yankees that never change. That's pride, tradition, and most of all, we have the greatest fans in the world. -Derek Jeter, 9/21/08 -- last words from old Yankee Stadium

I no longer care what the media/voters say/think and I'm tired of their holier than thou attitudes, if the numbers are there put 'em in. :-°

This and This. I don't think anyone really cares anymore...too little too late at this point.

Nothing wrong with how the voting works. The problem is in who holds the votes.

I agree that the bigger problem is who holds the votes, but I think the cap at 10 players is also a problem. When HoF voting first started, the league was a fraction of the size with an equally reduced number of players. Now, voting isn't necessarily based as much on merits (if it ever was) as it is on math. Guys who didn't vote for Morris in years past might be shifting their votes his direction because of a perception that he's getting close. If he's the 10th vote on someone's ballot, it's coming at the expense of someone who might also be deserving based on merits.

I think the entire system needs to be overhauled, but I have serious doubts that anything will ever happen. The people who have the vote get just as much ink as their subjects this time of year, and I don't think they'd be open to a system that took any sort of power away from them.

I don't see how taking the votes away from the writers and giving them to someone else is going to change any perception that it's a 'popularity contest'. Hand the votes over to the fans and forget it, waste of time. Hand the votes over to the players/managers and there's still the risk of a popularity contest, though I would agree that there would be more credibility to this version of popularity. Hand the votes over to the statisticians and it'd be a cold vote indeed. People say give the votes to someone else, but who is it and how are they going to be judged differently than the writers?

It would have been great to see Biggio get in, but ultimately, life moves on.

The idea of a first ballot HOFer is dumb. You're either a HOFer or you aren't.

I agree with you, but the voters take this as gospel and the only way Biggio got as many votes as he did was the boycott of suspected PED users.
