First, the basics. It's free. It's roto 6x6 (OPS, holds). It's a contract league based on Cot's salaries and auction-style free agency. The league has 16 teams...currently. Contraction is almost definite, as it is doubtful that all slots will be filled. The owners I have are the best group I've known in 19 years of playing fantasy: just need some to go along with them.
One huge difference between this league's openings and others: rather than taking some also-ran team (although some of the abandoned teams are pretty good), you'll have the opportunity to create your own team. All players from unowned teams will be placed in a draft and new owners will select from that pool. We also have a 10-man farm, for which there will be a separate dispersal draft.
The main thing about the league itself is that all players become FAs once they reach six years of service time, regardless of contract status. As such, there's always a decent crop of FAs. Between the draft and free agency, you can win - or at least place - very quickly.
Here's a partial list of draftable players: Dan Uggla, Edwin Encarnacion, Josh Hamilton, Felix Hernandez, Josh Johnson, Jon Papelbon, Matt Garza, Mike Napoli, Albert Pujols, Jose Reyes, Gio Gonzalez, Kyle Lohse, Mark Teixeira, Brandon Phillips, Adrian Beltre, Jacoby Ellsbury, CC Sabathia, Brandon Beachy, Adam LaRoche, Ben Zobrist, Ryan Zimmerman, Justin Upton, Yovani Gallardo, Hanley Ramirez, Carlos Beltran, Jay Bruce, Matt Wieters, David Wright, Roy Halladay, Jose Bautista, Asdrubal Cabrera, Giancarlo Stanton, Miguel Cabrera
*Some draftable players have expired contracts: in these cases, you can draft their matching rights in free agency. For instance, you spend a 10th-round pick on Hamilton. You get the right to match the highest offer for him in free agency, and that's it. There's the possibility of "wasting" a pick - and no, matching rights cannot be traded. Just want to throw that out there.
Here's a partial list of known FAs: Dustin Pedroia, Jon Lester, Josh Beckett, Adam Wainwright, Adrian Gonzalez, Yadier Molina, Jake Peavy, Ian Kinsler, Nick Swisher, Mariano Rivera, BJ Upton, Brian McCann, Curtis Granderson, Justin Verlander, Matt Cain, Shaun Marcum, Matt Joyce, Andre Ethier
It may sound like a lot, but I'm always willing to help out. One current owner will tell you: he asked quite a few questions and then finished third his first year.
