Keeper league ... Votto trade..suggestions?

5x5 Roto....5 keepers with no restrictions ... 10 pitchers/13 hitters

Current keepers are Cano, Kemp, Weaver, Votto and then one of Bourn or Trumbo(yuck)

I've been offered two trades for Votto:

Kershaw and Starlin Castro
Or
Gio Gonzalez and Bryce Harper


Thoughts?

How many teams are there?

I wouldn't even consider the Gio Gonzalez trade. Unless this is some ridiculously deep league that trade is basically Harper for Votto, which I would never do.

Now the first trade is a little interesting, but ultimately I would probably pass. To me Kershaw is the best young pitcher in the game and Castro is a top 3 shortstop. But in a league where you only keep 5 I would prefer to have four bats and one pitcher. Also the trade is really Votto and Bourn for Castro and Kershaw. I don't love Bourn as a 5th Keeper at all but he has some value, I guess.

Ultimately in your situation I would hold onto the first round elite batter.

You could always look to make a trade after the draft.

I think Kimbo is seriously undervaluing Gio Gonzalez. He has more value in that deal than Harper does. That being said, I wouldn't take either trade for Votto. Kimbo is right when he says that you keep the first round bat.

Basically it comes down to ...

Votto and Bourn (whom I prefer over Trumbo)

or

Kershaw and Castro

or

Gio and Harper.

I would stick with Votto since you already have Weaver. Kershaw and Castro is fair, but you need the bats more.

I would prefer to keep Votto with your keeper settings. Impact bat, and you already have an arm to keep.

The whole point of these forums is to learn, knowing you are a good poster, I went back and examined Gio's numbers. I was a harsher than I should have been on Gio. I still feel that in a 5 keeper league I wouldnt consider Gio anywhere near those top tier pitchers that I would be willing to take back in a trade for Votto. Admittedly that pool of pitchers is limited to a select few.

I don't dislike the first deal, but is Votto + Bourn < Kershaw and Castro? It's probably pretty close.

Ultimately, having 3 first round bats, a top pitcher in Weaver, you can probably afford to keep Bourn and not do this deal. I would try to improve that 5th keeper though. Maybe try and package Bourn and Trumbo together for a better 5th keeper? Might be tough to do though...

Votto is the best player and there isn't enough of a reason to downgrade or add a second pitcher. keep him.
